While Renaud’s death is being attributed to Russia, this info is sourced only to Ukraine officials. It does appear Renaud was killed in an area under Ukrainian control while wearing an old NYT press badge, but he hasn’t contributed anything to the NYT since 2015. It’s possible the Russians killed him, but it’s also possible they didn’t. It’s too early to know at this point.
