International Respiratory Care Week 2025

Theme: Your Breath....Our Mission.
Date: October 19–25, 2025

Celebrating the Global Legacy of Respiratory Care

International Respiratory Care Week 2025 is celebrated around the world to honor the exceptional contributions of Respiratory Therapists (RTs)—the professionals who stand at the frontlines of every breath, committed to improving lung health and saving lives.

This global observance traces its origins to 1982, when President Ronald Reagan officially proclaimed the third week of October as “National Respiratory Care Week” in the United States. The proclamation recognized the vital role of respiratory therapists in enhancing patient outcomes, advancing medical innovation, and supporting the nation’s health care system.

Since then, the celebration evolved into an international movement, now recognized annually during the last full week of October. It serves as a reminder of how respiratory care has expanded from hospital-based practice to an essential discipline that supports critical care, emergency medicine, neonatal and pediatric care, pulmonary rehabilitation, sleep medicine, home care, and public health worldwide.

Honoring the Heroes Behind Every Breath

Respiratory Therapists are integral members of multidisciplinary health care teams. They are experts in airway management, mechanical ventilation, oxygen therapy, pulmonary diagnostics, and critical care interventions—skills that are indispensable in saving patients from life-threatening conditions.

Their work extends far beyond hospital walls. RTs play a vital role in public health initiatives, disease prevention programs, chronic respiratory disease management, and research innovations that continue to redefine global standards of care.

During the COVID-19 pandemic and other health emergencies, respiratory therapists emerged as unsung heroes, demonstrating resilience, compassion, and expertise under extraordinary circumstances. Their leadership in critical care management has since reshaped the perception of respiratory therapy as a cornerstone of modern medicine.

Strengthening Health Systems and Global Collaboration

The field of respiratory care continues to evolve rapidly, propelled by innovation, education, and international collaboration. Around the world, professional organizations, ministries of health, and universities are expanding training programs, research capacity, and policy frameworks to integrate respiratory therapy into national health systems.

International Respiratory Care Week 2025 celebrates these achievements and calls for continued investment in:

🫁Education and professional development for respiratory therapists.
🫁Research and innovation in respiratory medicine, mechanical ventilation, and sleep health.
🫁Global collaboration to ensure equitable access to respiratory care services.
🫁Public awareness about the importance of lung health and disease prevention.

A Global Commitment to Lung Health

As we commemorate this week, we salute all Respiratory Therapists for their dedication, skill, and humanity. From intensive care units to home care environments, from neonatal wards to emergency response teams—RTs embody the spirit of service and scientific excellence.

Let this week remind the world that every breath matters, and that respiratory therapists everywhere remain “Dedicated to Saving Lives and Improving Lung Health for All Patients.”
