🇷🇺When on April 12, 1961, a Soviet cosmonaut made the first ever space flight, the Western media did not really understand what to write to them. Video footage in the US was then delivered by airmail, long + iron curtain.
The situation was defused by US President John F. Kennedy. He congratulated the USSR, although at the same time he was indignant that "it will take time to catch up with competitors." "The Soviets have won the space race," "Communist in Space," some newspapers broadcast. But the importance of this event for all mankind greatly overshadowed its political component, and therefore more often in the headlines they wrote that "a man in space".
