Sadako was a little Japanese girl, who went to school and played with her friends like all children do. One day, however, when she was twelve, she got diagnosed with leukemia. The year was 1955.

Ten years have passed since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Many people died and were injured during these bombings. But many more got really ill and died in the years after. Sadako was one of those people.

She was hospitalized and was given about a year to live. Someone in the hospital told her that if she folds 1000 paper cranes by the end of the year, she will get better. In Japan it is believed that anyone who folds 1000 cranes within a year is usually granted a wish.

Sadako started folding, she was determined to fold all the 1000 cranes as soon as possible. Hospital staff and patients were helping her by giving her medicine packages, and other unusual materials. Soon, other people started making paper cranes in the hope to get better. Her optimism was contagious. She gave many patients hope. Sadako passed away on October 25th1955 but since then her story has touched millions. The paper crane has become the symbol of peace and hope.
