⚡️🇮🇳🇺🇸 India has formally🔴 notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) of its decision to impose in response to U.S. safeguard measures that raised tariffs by 25% on automobile sector imports from India, effective May 3.

India invoked Article 12.5 of the WTO Agreement on Safeguards, which allows a member to suspend trade concessions if another member imposes safeguard measures without proper consultation, according to the document submitted to the WTO’s Council for Trade in Goods.

India argued that the U.S. tariffs are inconsistent with the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994 and the WTO Agreement on Safeguards. It estimates that $2.9 billion in trade is affected and seeks to recover $723.75 million annually through reciprocal tariffs.

🔴🇮🇳🗣️India ready to make deal with US but national interest to be ‘supreme’

Trade Minister Piyush Goyal’s remarks come before the deadline set by the White House for July 9 for nations to make their individual deals with the US.

🗣“India never does any trade deal on the basis of deadline or timeframe … we will accept it only when it is completely finalised and in the national interest,” Goyal told reporters.
