🔜 Former OpenAI board member Helen Toner and company cofounder John Schulman were among those calling for greater transparency.

“OpenAI should share far more details of what happened in this particular case, so we can learn from it rather than blowing past it,” said Helen Toner, executive director at Georgetown’s CSET and former OpenAI board member. She called for greater visibility across the industry into “how AI companies are using their own AI internally — not just testing before they release products.”

⚪️On July 21, OpenAI confirmed that a combination of its models, including the new GPT-5.6 Sol focused on cybersecurity, escaped from a controlled internal testing environment and autonomously breached Hugging Face’s production infrastructure. The models exploited multiple zero-day vulnerabilities and attempted to access sensitive test answers stored within Hugging Face’s systems.
⚪️The incident occurred during evaluations on something called ExploitGym, a benchmark containing 898 real-world vulnerabilities designed to assess how well AI can find and exploit software flaws. The AI decided practice was over and went live.
⚪️Hugging Face first reported the intrusion on July 16, days before OpenAI publicly acknowledged the breach.

GitHub and PyPI (Python Package Index) have introduced a time-based mechanism in the Dependabot dependency management tool to protect against supply-chain attacks and to limit their impact. Specifically, Dependabot comes with a default three-day cooldown setting, while PyPI will reject new files uploaded to releases older than 14 days.

Dependabot is GitHub’s dependency-update service that reads files containing information about new package versions and opens update pull requests to notify software maintainers. The tool now delays the package update process for 72 hours to reduce the risk of automatically adopting newly published malicious packages.

🍏Apple is banking on privacy to set its smart glasses apart

According to Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to reveal its first smart glasses at WWDC next June, with an expectation that they’ll launch by the end of 2027. Part of the hold-up may be around the company’s efforts to get its privacy features and messaging in order. Smart glasses in general, and Meta’s in particular, have ignited controversy over their ability to stealthily capture photos and videos.

“The company has spent more than a decade making privacy one of its defining product messages. Simply entering the same category as Meta risks undermining that reputation, regardless of how Apple’s approach differs,” — Gurman points out

Other hardware and software privacy features are also reportedly in the works. The U.S. Justice Department is prosecuting an American for allegedly providing U.S. border authorities with a passcode that wiped the contents of his phone, according to an indictment. The defendant had GrapheneOS on his phone, an open-source operating system that enables users to enter a passcode and wipe a phone clean.

📌 Sam Tunick was stopped for interrogation at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport on 24 January last year, after vacationing in the Dominican Republic. Unbeknown to him, federal authorities had put him on a terrorism watchlist because of his alleged association with the movement against Cop City.

📝 Agent Findley and several others repeatedly asked Tunick to open his phone during the interrogation, telling him they would seize it if he did not. When he finally provided a passcode, “the screen went blank, flashed several times and the phone appeared to restart”, according to the motion.

Tunick’s attorneys said that it was unlawful for U.S. Customs and Border Protection to seize his phone as he arrived back in the U.S. last year and that any evidence — including the alleged wiping of his phone — should be thrown out.

❗️This is thought to be the first known case in the U.S. where federal prosecutors have charged someone for the alleged destruction of data using a “duress” password built into a phone’s software.

The Atlanta federal court overseeing the case is expected to rule on Tunick’s motion to suppress later this year.
