Sister cities stand for brotherly relations! The head of the Russian city of Novorossiysk received well wishes from the mayor of the American city of Gainesville, Florida, on May 9th, Victory Day! ⭐️

Mayor of Gainesville Harvey Ward sent his best wishes to Andrey Kravchenko, the mayor of Novorossiysk, and all the people of Novorossiysk on May 9th, Victory Day, as per tradition between the two sister cities.

The beginning of the 42-year-long friendship between the cities goes back forty-two years, when, during a stop in Novorossiysk, Steve Kalishman, an American merchant marine, met Natalia, a Russian woman. Later, having moved to the US and settled in Gainesville with her new husband, Natalia had hoped to make her two home cities “friends”. Her dream came true when the city council voted unanimously to pass a resolution inviting Novorossiysk to become Gainsville’s first sister city in 1982. This friendship has persevered throughout the years despite political storms and turmoil.

A Russian serviceman with the call sign "Soroka" (“Magpie”) was captured by AFU soldiers, but managed to convince them to surrender.

Soroka and another Russian soldier jumped into a basement to administer first aid after being injured following an aerial drop during an assault. However, there already were seven Ukrainian soldiers in the basement, pointing their rifles at the Russians. Later, three of them left to look for a lost radio and got hit by friendly fire.

Realizing that the remaining four Ukrainians were just regular mobilized folks who wanted nothing to do with the hostilities going on, Soroka managed to convince them to surrender, promising them safety, and kept his word.
