QUAKE TIPS

What to do during a quake?

[1] 'Drop, cover and hold on' when you feel shaking:
(a) Drop on hands and knees
(b) Cover head and neck
(c) Hold on to shelter or something stable, such as legs of a strong table

[2] Look online for quake location magnitude to determine damage:
(a) If magnitude 6 and 30-40km away, probably safer to leave building when there is less shaking
(b) If magnitude 7, likely dangerous to leave building

What if indoors?

[1] If with access to open space, quickly get out
[2] If on higher floor, 'stop, cover and hold on' and wait for instructions
[3] Stay calm and try to get food and clean water (in bottles), with a whistle or anything that can make noise for rescue
[4] As gas pipeline could be broken, do not light fire

What if outdoors?

[1] Avoid bridges, tall buildings and trees
[2] Go to open space quickly
[3] Drivers should slow down, get out of traffic, find open space and stay in vehicle until shaking stops
[4] Avoid areas with steep slopes in case there are landslides

When to return?

[1] Even without signs of damage, do not return because aftershocks will occur after a big quake
[2] Safety depends on magnitude of the quake and shaking
[3] Look for govt info online for instructions
