This remains one of the darkest parts of Rise of the Clones: The Cabbage Patch Babies, because their story sits directly beside the strange repopulation of the late 19th century. During a period marked by enormous social upheaval, thousands upon thousands of children suddenly appeared inside orphanages, baby farms, institutions and organised relocation programmes. Many were transported across countries, assigned new identities and placed into families who often knew almost nothing about where those children had actually come from.

At exactly the same time, incubator babies began appearing before paying audiences inside exhibitions and amusement venues, presented almost like technological curiosities rather than vulnerable newborn children. These infants were placed inside machinery, observed by enormous crowds and displayed within a culture becoming increasingly fascinated with artificial reproduction and controlled human development. The official explanations surrounding those exhibitions barely touch the much darker possibility explored throughout my book.

The question becomes even more disturbing once the enormous numbers of apparently parentless children are examined beside what was happening elsewhere during the same period. Orphan trains moved youngsters across vast distances, baby farms handled infants with little surviving documentation and institutions became clearing houses for people whose original identities could disappear remarkably easily. A child without verifiable parents, reliable records or living relatives could effectively enter society carrying whatever history had been prepared for them.

That’s where the Cabbage Patch Babies become something far more disturbing than another forgotten chapter involving Victorian poverty. My research explores the possibility that these children formed part of a deliberate repopulation programme following the destruction of Tartaria and the Old World, with human reproduction being managed on an industrial scale. The enormous numbers involved make the subject even darker, particularly once cloning and artificial human creation enter the wider story.

If that sounds impossible, remember that cloning didn’t suddenly begin with Dolly the sheep during the 1990s. Human beings had been attempting to manufacture life for centuries, from the homunculus and alchemical experimentation through increasingly sophisticated biological techniques hidden behind laboratory doors. My book follows that trail backwards and forwards, showing how apparently separate subjects begin forming one deeply disturbing history of artificial human creation.
