Hi, I’m Alex Ovcharenko, UX designer working in maritime domain, and this is my channel about the design of user interfaces for professional systems and equipment. Originally I write in Russian, but primarily for my international friends and colleagues I decided to share my thoughts and experience in English. Let’s see how it goes.
One of my daily background activities — is to try to create some kind of design system, that fits professional context. Core idea is to support advanced set of color palettes (including the red one for night vision support), multiple tiers of panels and controls on them. It is pretty ambitious task for a single person and spare time, but I slowly move in this direction.

The Protraktor UI Kit description (right now it is just a draft) is located at kit.protraktor.design, and I also started two GitHub projects that will contain CSS files and Qt stylesheets (and some C++ classes) that support this design approach.

Nice article about fonts legibility — https://www.nngroup.com/articles/best-font-for-online-reading/
Nielsen Norman Group
Best Font for Online Reading: No Single Answer
Among high-legibility fonts, a study found 35% difference in reading speeds between the best and the worst. People read 11% slower for every 20 years they age.

Found cool classic book — “Semiology of Graphics Diagrams, Networks, Maps” by Jacques Bertin, French cartographer and expert in visualisation of information. It was originally published in 1967, but is still a viable source on the theory of information design — if you miss the depth of analysis, foundations and motivation behind — it is definitely something worth to look at.

Finally, I started translating some materials from my original blog in Russian. Here is the first one — “Interaction meta-scenarios”

https://www.pushconf.tv/dark-mode-is-wrong/ — while this presentation has quite strange clickbait headline, it is a good critical review of dark modes with academic studies references. Worth to watch during lunch time

Dark Mode Is Wrong
As digital designers we don’t dig into academic research as much as we should, and that lack of learning is starting to cause harm in the experiences we design.
