All nine species of baobabs found on Earth have been planted in different parts of Madagascar, with seven of them growing only on the Great Red Island. Along the dirt road are dozens of 30-foot-tall Adansonia grandidieri trees several girths thick. The trees in the baobab alley are 800 years old. Madagascar has no animals typical of Africa - lions, giraffes, zebras and hippos. The island is home to about 12 thousand species of animals and plants, of which more than 10 are unique.
