🚨 What is MEV and why should you care?
Every time you trade on-chain, someone might be profiting—because you did it.
Let’s break down MEV like you’re in the room with the alpha 👇
🔍 MEV = Maximal Extractable Value
It’s the hidden value block builders extract by reordering, inserting, or excluding transactions in a block.
They don’t just process your txns—they optimize them for their profit
🎟 Imagine this:
You’re buying concert tickets online.
You click “Buy.”
Suddenly someone jumps ahead, buys first, and relists the same ticket for 2x.
On Ethereum, that scalper is a bot.
And the checkout queue? The mempool.
💥 Three main types of MEV:
1️⃣ Frontrunning – A bot sees your trade, buys first, you get worse pricing.
2️⃣ Backrunning – A bot sells after your trade to profit from your price impact.
3️⃣ Sandwiching – You get sandwiched between both and pay the price.
⸻
🧠 How?
Validators (or block builders) decide which txns get included and in what order.
They don’t always pick what’s fair—they pick what’s profitable.
This has created a whole MEV economy:
• 🧑💻 Searchers (find opportunities)
• 🧱 Builders (create MEV-rich blocks)
• ✅ Validators (choose highest-paying blocks)
⚠️ Not all MEV is evil
Some MEV (like backrunning arbitrage) actually helps DEXs stay in sync.
But toxic MEV—like sandwiching—harms users, clogs the network, and concentrates power.
🔧 Can we fix MEV?
Innovations are in progress:
• 🛡 Private & encrypted mempools
• 🏛 Fair ordering protocols
• 💸 Order Flow Auctions (where users get paid MEV)
But it’s an arms race.
⸻
🧩 Bottom line:
MEV is baked into the architecture of blockchains.
We can’t remove it—but we can choose who benefits.
🫵 Will MEV fund the next generation of validators and bots—or the users who drive the chain?
