Ethiopia, UK bolster ties focusing women’s empowerment, social protection
****
(E P A )
The United Kingdom is eager to enhance its bilateral relations and cooperation with Ethiopia, particularly in areas related to women’s empowerment and social protection, according to Ethiopia's Ministry of Women and Social Affairs (MoWSA).
In a discussion with the UK delegation, led by Ambassador Darren Welch, Minister of Women and Social Affairs Ergogie Tesfaye (PhD) outlined key areas of collaboration, including social protection, gender equality, women’s rights, and their pivotal role in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. The meeting also addressed critical issues such as women’s economic empowerment and efforts to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and gender-based violence.
The Minister provided an overview of the Ministry’s initiatives, which focus on supporting women, children, youth, people with disabilities (PWDs), and vulnerable groups, including the elderly. She expressed her appreciation for the ongoing support provided by the UK in Ethiopia’s efforts to strengthen social protection, promote gender equality, and empower communities.
However, the Minister emphasized the need for deeper cooperation on gender equality, citing challenges such as entrenched societal perceptions, limited access to information, and resource constraints that hinder progress.
Ambassador Welch acknowledged the Ministry’s work beyond its core mandate and reiterated the UK’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Ethiopia in multiple areas, with a particular focus on advancing women’s rights and social development, according to MoWSA.
