Jyeshteshwara Temple or Pas-Pahar (called so by the Bhuddists) on Shankracharya Hill on the Zabarawan range, Srinagar.
The Jyeshteshwara Temple or Pas-Pahar, is considered to be the oldest temple in the Kashmir valley and there is no concensus on it's date of construction. The foundation and the steps have been found to be older than the structure, suggesting that it was rebuilt.
Persians and Jews call it Bagh-i-sulaiman or the Garden of King Solomon.
Kalhana mentions that King Gopaditya built the temple on the top of the hill as a shrine to Jyesthesvara (Shiva Jyestharuda) around 371 BC. Kashmiri Hindus strongly believe the temple was visited by Adi Shankara in the 8th century and has ever since been associated with him and this is how the temple and hill got the name Shankaracharya.
The temple is also revered by the Buddhists who undertake pilgrimage to this place (Budhissim is said to have arrived in Kashmir before Sanatan and grew under Emperor Ashoka, 304 BC to 232 BC) and the hill which has had multiple names over the centuries, is connected to the Persian and Muslim faith as well.
According to historians, this temple was originally a Buddhist temple that was extremely popular during the Buddhist era. The temple was then later on changed to a Hindu site and Adi Shankaracharya made it a Hindu place of worship.
The present shivling is said to have been installed during the Sikh rule in Kashmir between 1819 (after the battle of Shopian) and 1846 and the temple was repaired by the Sikh Governor, Sheikh Ghulam Mohi-nu-ddin.
Kalhana, often referred to as India's first historian, has the oldest historical reference to it and the mountain has been mentioned as Gopa Hill or Gopadari. Other names associated with the hill include Sandhiman-parvat, Koh-e-Suleman, Takht-i-Sulaiman or simply Takht Hill.
