This is slightly worrying. I work with 1550nm lasers (its common in fiber networks especially for long-distance and wave division multiplexing). With lasers there's no safe power at these frequencies, only a time before the damage occurs (MPE Maximum Permissible Exposure).

I deal with relatively low-power 1550nm lasers. About 4dBm equivalent to 2.5 milliwatts. When I did my laser safety training (decades ago now) we were taught never to look directly into the laser. This is despite it having a Class 1 rating, the safest rating. It's the exposure time that matters. A casual glance won't matter too much. But these beams are invisible. You might be staring at the beam for seconds without realizing.

And even for Class 1 lasers you must never look at them using an inspection scope or magnifier. That would cause instant damage to the retina. It's all about MPE and the magnifier increases the exposure.

For my colleagues who work with 100mW lasers they're required to wear 1550nm protective goggles. At these power levels the eye damage is instantaneous. I've seen similar damage to cameras from their 100mW lasers. However I have never damaged a camera or scope with my puny 2.5mW lasers.

If these LIDAR 1550nm lasers are instantly damaging the camera they are far more powerful than anything I deal with on a regular basis. I recommend NEVER look into these LIDAR lasers for ANY length of time.
