On 10 Mar, 2025, at least 52 inmates escaped from the overcrowded Kutacane Penitentiary in Indonesia’s Aceh province when they were breaking fast for Ramadan.
The inmates were captured on video escaping through the main prison entrance and the roof.
According to Rika Aprianti, spokesperson for the Directorate General of Corrections, 24 inmates have been recaptured, while authorities are still searching for the remaining 28.
It has been confirmed that Kutacane Penitentiary has a capacity for just 100 prisoners but currently holds around 368 inmates.
