In 1996, at the age of 20, I visited Mumbai for the first time.
Growing up in a small coastal town in Karnataka, Mumbai felt like a world apart—its vibrant energy and fast-paced life made me fall in love with this city from day one.
Back then, I worked at a South Indian restaurant called Satkar, just opposite to Churchgate station.
Fresh out of college with a BSc, I was desperate to start earning, and my first salary was Rs 700 per month, along with free food and accommodation at the restaurant.
Marine Drive was just a short walk away from Satkar, and every evening after my shift, I’d find myself there, standing there and gazing at the iconic skyline. I’d often look up at the towering Trident Hotel, wondering what it would be like to stay in one of those rooms overlooking the sea, imagining how lucky those people living in those rooms were.
