I surely agree that we need a broader conversation of what exactly is “support” both for bad people/media/art and good people/media/art. Is it enough that I’m reading this insightful book by this Black author? Shouldn’t I apply these ideas to my real life for my “support” to mean anything? Shouldn’t I keep giving platform and uplifting indie Black voices?

On this matter
Superiority isn’t granted to you because of your interests or hobbies (or how special and rare they are).
Felling worthy because you’re into a specific subject or a fandom is both harmful to you and others who don’t take part in them.
This ‘advantage’ and ‘being different’ is a short-lived feeling considering how often people’s interests change and when we get to the core of it all people shame you for your ‘mainstream’ interests and hobbies just to show their dominance (apparently we live in the wilderness now =-) ) and for the sake of making others feel less worthy of attention.
“Superior comes from selfishness. Selfishness comes from the sensation of being separate from all around you. We call this common term ‘ego’.” You can believe that your way of thinking is ‘superior’ to others’ just because you tend to compare yourself to them all the god damn time. Judgment and fear are some of the many negative products that grow from this selfishness.
Love whatever you want however you want as long as you’re not harming anyone in any way.
And don’t y’all EVER think you’re less valuable if you like pop music or haven’t read classic literature or don’t enjoy reading poems or haven’t watched a popular show or aren’t attracted to a certain aesthetic.

this is exactly why I think Lil Nas X is such a trailblazer in the music industry. It’s so refreshing to see people like him being confident in the expression of their sexuality.
Because when Harry styles was selling nail polish and getting praised and called original, a pioneer and etc (which they aren’t by the way), Lil Nas X was taking risks, taking the narrative into his own hands, unapologetically celebrating the sexuality of gay men, giving the devil a lap danse in his music video and making the average american church goer shit their pants.
This is part of the lyrics of “call me by your name (montero)”:
“I wanna feel on your ass in Hawaii
I want that jet lag from fuckin' and flyin'
Shoot a child in your mouth while I'm ridin'”
About this lyrics he said in an interview with genius(I paraphrased a bit for simplicity):
“When I said that (the lyrics) in the studio, everybody looked at me like 😦😦🤨🤨🤨
It was kind of a funny moment, … but it’s about time that I say something out of pocket in a song.
….let’s normalize having these fucking lines in songs; the same way somebody might talk about fucking a girl ot a guy (in a straight relationship).
I feel like that’s really important for representation in general and this is gonna open more doors.
One day when somebody says “oh that person said that” and not even think about it, you know?”
now THIS is what I call original not whatever the fuck Harry Styles and their team are up to.
for so long representation of gay men in media has been “tame” and censored so it could be easy on the eyes of the straight viewer and so they wouldn’t call gay men “gross” and call AIDS a gay disease.
It’s time to move forward.
People like Harry Styles hold us back. They paint a nonthreatening, unasuming image of queerness and choose pleasing straight audience over the queer people who helped build their carriers.
If the celebrity/brand can pick sides, the audience has the power to do that too.
There’s the issues of selling an exploitative and voyeruistic-almost pornographic-image of queer relationships and then there’s the issue of straightwashing queer relationships, keeping it “tender” (in the words of Styles themself). and it’s tricky to get all the nuances correctly and not become trapped in either of those when creating queer media. Harry Styles is clearly struggling at keeping his balance and walking that fine line (pun intended). I hope they grows from this.
