For those who maybe confuse...we have to look at what the object is actually doing. For acceleration (a > 0)..the velocity of the object is increasing..while deceleration (a < 0)..the velocity of the object is decreasing.
In the quiz, the acceleration changes from 3 m s-² to 2 m s-²..both numbers are positive.Because the acceleration is still positive,the object is still gaining speed every second.
It is simply gaining speed more slowly than it was before.
Imagine you are pressing the gas pedal in a car. At first, you floor it which is high acceleration.Then, you lift your foot slightly but keep pressing down which is lower acceleration.The car is still speeding up, just not as quickly as before.You haven't hit the brakes yet..
So...when would it be deceleration? For the motion to be considered deceleration,the acceleration value would need to become negative which is relative to the direction of motion..
