Density of pole

High density
Pole is heavier and more stable, harder to be blown over by wind.


Flexibility of pole

Low flexibility (stiff)
Pole does not bend easily, so it stays upright in strong wind.


Maximum tension of string

High maximum tension
String will not break when strong wind pulls the pole.


Height / position of strings

Strings tied far and symmetrically. Gives better support and balance, prevents the pole from falling.




- A pole with high density has greater mass and weight. Greater weight → larger gravitational force acting downward. This increases stability and reduces the tendency to topple due to wind force.

- A pole with low flexibility (stiff). Undergoes less elastic deformation when wind applies a force. Produces a larger restoring force to return to its original position due to tension of rope. Prevents excessive bending that may cause breaking.

- Strong wind produces a large pulling force (tension) in the strings. If maximum tension is high, the string will not break.The strings can counteract the wind force and keep the pole upright.

- Strings tied symmetrically and far from the pole. Produce balanced tension forces on both sides. Reduce net torque acting on the pole.Help maintain rotational equilibrium.
