Dr. Daniel Williams founded the first Black-owned hospital in the U.S., treating both Black and white patients, Provident Hospital and Training School for Nurses on May 4, 1891.

In 1893 he performed the first successful open-heart surgery. Two years later, he established the National Medical Association (because African Americans were barred from membership in the AMA at that time), making it a priority to eliminate health disparities and ensure access to professional medical care for all.

To this day, as a sign of the respect from the Black medical community, a "code blue" at the Howard University Hospital emergency room is called a "Dr. Dan."

Brugada syndrome, a rare congenital heart disorder that affects the ability of cardiac muscle cells to conduct an action potential.

The mutation of the SC5NA gene is the most well-known genetic cause of Brugada syndrome. SC5NA codes for sodium ion channels in the cell membranes of cardiac muscle cells, and a faulty sodium ion channel affects the ability of these cells to conduct an action potential. As a result, some regions of the heart repolarize abnormally.

On an ECG, Brugada syndrome typically has ST elevations (which are often a sign of ventricular strain), as well as a right bundle branch block, indicating that the ventricles aren't depolarizing normally. Thus, these regions become susceptible to what's called a reentrant loop, when a depolarization signal circles around repeatedly, causing ventricular tachycardia and sometimes ventricular fibrillation
