The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) has observed its most massive black hole merger to date. This event challenges current theories on how such large black holes can form. The discovery, named GW231123, resulted in the detection of a single black hole approximately 225 times the mass of the Sun.

Both of these objects fall within a size range, from 60 to 130 solar masses, that scientists previously thought was impossible for black holes formed from the collapse of a star. So it becomes a real challenge to our understanding of black hole formation, researchers say.
