📌 Kenya's Essay-Writing Industry Collapsed Two Years After ChatGPT's Launch

For more than a decade, tens of thousands of young Kenyans made a living writing college essays for students in the United States, Britain and elsewhere. Researchers estimated that at least 40,000 people in Nairobi alone were being paid to complete other students' homework at the industry's peak.

That industry has now largely collapsed, undone within two years of ChatGPT's release in late 2022, as students turned to AI tools that produce passable academic prose in minutes. One writer profiled by the Times, Teresios Bundi, moved to Nairobi for university in 2011 and, after graduating, chose essay writing over a career in public health. He charged $40 to $70 per paper and estimates he wrote more than 2,500 essays over twelve years.

The proof was produced by a group of 10,000 AI agents running on an internal model that the company says is more powerful than GPT-6 Astra. It took 88 hours and 130 billion output tokens.

The agents showed that the flow of a viscous fluid under a smooth external force accelerates to infinite speed in finite time—meaning the equations stop describing reality. OpenAI does not intend to claim the $1 million prize.

There are already questions about the result: mathematician Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpöge of Anthropic today released their own proofs for related equations, along with a statement describing how OpenAI proposed publishing the Navier–Stokes work without Alpöge, because he works for a competitor.

These are the findings revealed by AI Girlfriend Coach research project, which surveyed more than 1,700 American adults.

One-third of respondents consider any intimate interactions with AI to be cheating. Roughly one in six believes that being unfaithful specifically refers to attachment (emotional or sexual) to a bot. One in five does not consider such interactions to be cheating, but would still be uncomfortable with it.

💡 Men and women enter into "relationships" with AI in roughly equal proportions. 44.7% of Millennials, 31.6% of Generation X, and just 12.5% of Gen Z are willing to have an AI partner.
