A new case published by the PDPC this month highlights the need for organisations to put in place adequate security arrangements tailored to their business processes.

The case examines security gaps caused by a large-scale software migration, where a single employee was responsible to carry out a critical process manually with inadequate checks and support. This oversight allowed a threat actor to exfiltrate personal data of over 660,000 customers, which was later offered for sale on the dark web.

While the organisation took prompt action to mitigate the breach and notify affected customers, the breach of its obligation to protect personal data in its possession led to a financial penalty of $315,000 by the PDPC.

The case underscores the need for organisations to put in place the right processes to ensure that critical steps are done right, and automate tasks where possible to minimise the risk of manual errors.
