On the Issue of Ishā

Question:

The Caller is asking about Salahtul Ishā as she is a student and someone had given her information that it is one hour after the Athan of Maghrib and she wants the correct answer around that because she has prayed a number of prayers following that fatwa.
Answer:

In the name of Allāh The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful All praise is (Purely) due to Allāh The lord of all that which exists.
And may blessings and peace be upon our Prophet ‌‎Muhammad ‎ﷺ and upon his family and his companions. And those who follow them in goodness until the day of Judgement.

If the one who was asking the question is a student, there is nothing upon her. The sin is upon him (The one who gave her the fatwa) because he gave her a wrong fatwa without knowledge. And Indeed, Allāh has said

‏As-Saf 61:7
وَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَ

‏And who does more wrong than the one who invents a lie against Allāh

And he misguided a person without knowledge. Indeed, Allāh doesn’t guide the wrongdoing people. Whoever gives fatwas to the people without knowledge (clear understanding) which is wrong, Allāh has left him astray and hasn’t guided him because he is a wrongdoer. Whoever gives a fatwa saying that Ishā enters one hour after beginning of sun set, indeed he has given a fatwa without any knowledge. Because the Prophet ﷺ ‎of Allāh told us that the time of Ishā doesn’t enter except when the redness in the sky completely disappears. And it’s not possible for the redness in the sky to go only one hour after the beginning of sun set.

And it is for the one who gave the fatwa to repent to Allāh and reflect upon this matter. And not to misguide the servants of Allāh from the laws of Allāh
(سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ)
Imam Ibn Al-Jawzi رحمه اللّه said:

"My son, do not let your past carelessness make you lose hope of achieving good, for many people have come back to wakefulness after long sleep."

What should we do during these blessed days?

Shaykh Dr. Muḥammad Hishām al-Ṭāhirī al-Afghānī حفظه الله
*What to do During the First Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah*

Narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said that the Prophet ﷺ said:
> “There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these days” — meaning the first ten days (of Dhul-Hijjah). They said: “O Messenger of Allah, not even jihad in the way of Allah?” He said: “Not even jihad in the way of Allah, except for a man who goes out with his life and wealth and returns with nothing from that (i.e., he loses both his life and wealth).”

This hadith shows that good deeds during these days are more beloved to Allah than deeds done during any other days of the year, without exception. The only exception is the highest form of jihad, where a person gives up both his life and wealth completely.

There is no authentic hadith specifying exactly how much the reward is multiplied during these days, but the hadith clearly shows that the reward is immensely great, and Allah knows best how great it is.

The hadith of Ibn Abbas also indicates that all righteous deeds are multiplied during these ten days without exception.

Sheikh Saliḥ Al-Fawzān on the actions that should be *increased* upon during the days of Dhul-Hijjah:

1⃣. Voluntary prayer, especially at night

2⃣. Voluntary fasting, especially the ninth day (except for those performing Hajj)

3⃣. Glorifiying Allāh with takbīr (i.e saying: "Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar, Lā ilāha illa Allāh, Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar, wa lillāhi al-Ḥamd")

4⃣. Gloryifying Allāh with tasbih (i.e saying: "Subḥān Allāh") and tahlil (i.e saying: "Lā ilāha illa Allāh")

5⃣. Reciting the Qur'ān

6⃣. Giving charity to the poor and for the sake of Allāh

7⃣. To sacrifice on the day of 'Eid

A student should collect benefits in his books by writing them down, as writing is from the uṣūl of seeking knowledge.

Having separate notebooks for different sciences helps a student remain organised. When reviewing, it becomes much easier to return to and find those benefits.

A beneficial lesson from Ḥilyat Ṭālib al-ʿIlm by Shaykh Abū Bakr رحمه الله, taught by Ustādh Abū Ishaq Muhammad حفظه الله

This is why our notebooks are designed this way — no more searching through different notebooks, but instead recognising each subject simply by looking at the front cover.

The Ten Days of Dhul Hijjah | Abu Fajr AbdulFattaah Bin Uthman
{قُلۡ نَارُ جَهَنَّمَ أَشَدُّ حَرࣰّاۚ لَّوۡ كَانُوا۟ یَفۡقَهُونَ}
"Say, ‘Hellfire is hotter.’ If only they understood!" [Surah At-Tawbah: 81]

This heat we’re experiencing should serve as a small reminder of the heat of Hellfire.

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«“The Fire complained to its Lord, saying: ‘O Lord, parts of me have consumed other parts.’ So Allah allowed it two breaths: one breath in the winter and one breath in the summer. This is why you experience the most intense heat and the most severe cold.”
— [Bukhari & Muslim]»

If we are struggling with this heat — and temperatures haven’t even reached 40°C — then how can we not fear the heat of Jahannam?

May Allah protect us from the Fire and keep us far away from the sins that lead to it.

💧*A Secret Moment With Allâh ﷻ*

✍️ On the authority of ‘Umar ibn al-Ward رحمه الله, he said:

‘Atā ibn Abī Rabāḥ رحمه الله said to me:

“If you can be alone with yourself on the evening of ‘Arafah, then do so.”
📖 ‘Abdullāh in Zawā’id az-Zuhd (2211)

The evening of ‘Arafah is not a time for distraction and noise — it is a time for the heart to return sincerely to Allâh ﷻ.

Withdraw from the crowd of worldly concerns, even if only for a little while. Sit alone with your sins, your hopes, your fears, your du‘ā, and your need for your Lord. These are precious moments in which tears may erase years of mistakes and sincere supplication may open doors you thought would never open.

🌧️ Sometimes the most beloved deeds to Allâh ﷻ are the quiet ones:

🔹️a whisper of istighfār,
🔹️tears unseen by people,
🔹️a heart trembling in repentance,
🔹️or a desperate du‘ā raised in solitude.

The righteous predecessors understood the value of being alone on this blessed evening because hearts are more present when distractions are removed.

Do not let the evening of ‘Arafah pass like any other evening. Perhaps this may be the du‘ā that changes your destiny, the repentance that wipes away your sins, or the moment Allâh ﷻ turns your heart completely back to Him.
