Valentine's Day???

Fatwa no. 21203

Q: Some people celebrate Valentine's Day on February 14 by exchanging red roses, dressing in red, and congratulating one another on that day. Some cake shops make heart-shaped cakes in red and draw hearts on them and other shops advertise special items on sale for this day. What is your opinion on:

First: Celebrating this day?

Second: Buying from these stores on this day?

Third: Shop owners who do not celebrate this day but sell gifts to those who do celebrate it?

May Allāh reward you with the best.

A: The clear-cut evidence from the Qur'an and Sunnah, upon which the Salaf (righteous predecessors) of this Ummah (nation based on one creed) unanimously agree, confirms that there are only two Eids (festivals) in Islam: Eid-ul-Fitr (the Festival of Breaking the Fast) and 'Eid-ul-Adha (the Festival of the Sacrifice). Any other festival, whether peculiar to a person, a group, an event or stands for any meaning whatever, is an invented festival that is not permissible for Muslims to celebrate, approve of, enjoy, or support in any way, because this is considered to be a transgression of the boundaries of Allāh's Law. Anyone who transgresses the boundaries set by Allāh has wronged themselves. If we add to this fabricated festival the fact that it is one of the festivals of the Kafirs (disbelievers), this heaps sin upon sin, because it entails imitating them and is a type of support of them. Allāh (سبحانه وتعالى) forbids the Mu'mins (believers), in His Ever-Glorious Book, from imitating or supporting the Kafirs. It is authentically reported that the (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "Anyone who imitates a people is one of them."

Valentine's Day falls under this heading, as it is one of the idolatrous Christian festivals. It is not lawful for a Muslim who believes in Allāh and the Last Day to celebrate, approve of, or congratulate people on it; it is forbidden to them. Rather, it is obligatory for them to ignore and avoid it, in obedience to Allāh and His Messenger ﷺ and to keep away from that which will arouse Allāh’s Anger and incur Punishment.

It is also Haram (prohibited) for Muslims to support this festival or any other forbidden festival by any means, whether by supplying food or drinks; selling, buying, manufacturing, gift-giving, corresponding, advertising and so on, because all this comes under cooperating in sin and transgression, and disobeying Allāh and His Messenger ﷺ . Allāh (سبحانه وتعالى) says: "Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwâ (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allāh. Verily, Allāh is Severe in punishment."

It is obligatory for Muslims to adhere to the Qur'an and Sunnah in all matters, especially in times of Fitnah (trial) when corruption is widespread. They must be sagacious enough and on their guard to avoid falling into the misguidance of those who have earned Allāh's Anger, those who went astray, or the Fasiqs (those flagrantly violating Islamic law) who have no fear of Allāh nor have pride in being Muslims. Muslims should resort to Allāh, asking for guidance and steadfastness in Islam, as it is Allāh Alone Who guides and keeps us steadfast.

May Allāh grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and his family and Companions.

Making the Nīya (intention) to fast

Shaykh Sālih Al Fawzan ‏ حفظه الله
الحمد لله وأشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له وأشهد أن محمدا عبده ورسوله أما بعد

I quickly looked through the books of sunnah pertaining to taraweh and qiyām al-layl. I found that (below) is a summary of the different types of people who stand in prayer in ramadhān.

1. A person praying by himself in the beginning of the night in the masjid. Some of the sahābah did this at the time of Umar bin khattāb before he gathered the people for taraweh.

2. A person praying in congregation during the first part of the night in the masjid. It was done at the time of Umar radiallāhu anhu before he gathered the people for taraweh and also after.

3. A person standing in prayer alone in the first part of the night in his home. According to the general hadīth "from part of the night..." the Messenger of Allāh prayed in.
(meaning He صلى الله عليه وسلم  prayed in the earlier part of the night, the middle and the last third part of the night.)

4. A person standing in prayer in the first part of the night in congregation in his house. This is according to what is legislated regarding praying in congregation and sometimes for qiyām al-layl and was practiced by Hudhayfa and ibn Abbās radiallahu anhum and other than them with the messenger صلى الله عليه و سلم.

5. A person praying alone in the last part of the night in the masjid. As the people of Suffah used to practice.

6. A person praying in the last part of the night in the masjid in congregation. According to the general proof pertaining to the messenger صلى الله عليه و سلم praying with the companions in Ramadhān and then leaving it off so the people dont think its obligatory.

7. A person praying in his home in the last part of the night by himself. Which has been reported numerous times that the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم did this.

8. A person praying in congregation in his home in the last part of the night. This happened many times whereby the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم prayed with people outside of the month of Ramadhān.

9. A person praying by himself in the masjid in the first prat of the night and also the last part.

10. A person praying in congregation in the first part of the night and last in the masjid. This is called 'ta'qīb'. Some āthār have come with regards to this from the salaf at the time of Umar and ibn Abbās radiallāhu anhum.

11. A person prays by himself in his home in the first part of the night and last. This can be taken from the hadīth of ibn Abbās in Bukhari and Muslim whereby the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم prayed then slept and then woke up and prayed again.

12. A person prays in the home in congregation in the first and last part of the night. The proof for it has preceded.

Additonally, what is intended by congregation can be the specific imam of the masjid or any one leading the prayer in the masjid. All of the above ways of praying have general proof for them and narrations and actions of the salaf.

It should be noted that most of the time the salaf went home to pray in congregation would be to pray with their families for reasons like teaching them.

According to Imām Ahmad rahimahullah, he preferred that a person prays with the imām in the masjid and doesn't leave until the imām finishes. This is due to the hadīth of abī dharr radiallāhu anhu whereby he said whoever stands (in prayer) with the imām until he finishes will get the reward of praying the qiyām al-layl.

These are brief points a person can delve into each point deeply.

What i see is that if a person thinks he can strive to pray with the imām until he finishes then that is khair and he can follow the way of the general muslims and according to the hadīth mentioned.

And if a person thinks he can have more khushū and pray longer at home then that could be better for him. Many of the sahābah including Umar and ibn Abbās used to do this.

Ikrima used to pray with the people and then return to the house and wake ibn abbās so he can pray on his own.
1
Our shaykh, Muqbil al wādi'ee used to pray most of the salawāt in the home and would come out the odd nights to pray in the masjid and he would find that the masjid was full of students praying behind the imām and he wouldnt criticize them for it.

How Is Jinn Possession Possible During Ramadan If Jinns Are Chained up?

Al-Qurtubi rahimahullah said:

"It may be that only some devils are chained — specifically the strongest ones — as mentioned in some narrations, not all of them." [Fat-h Al-Bari]

This is supported by the following:

1⃣. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
((إذا كانَت أوَّلُ ليلةٍ من رمَضانَ صُفِّدتِ الشَّياطينُ ومَردةُ الجِنِّ))
"When the first night of Ramadan begins, the devils and the rebellious jinn are chained up." [Reported by At-Tirmidhi (682) and Ibn Majah (1642); graded sahih by Al-Albani]

2⃣. Al-Bukhari reported in his Sahih from ‘Ali ibn Al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Safiyyah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, told him that she came to visit the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in i‘tikaf (seclusion for worship) in the masjid during the last ten nights of Ramadhan. She spoke with him for a while, then she got up to leave. The Prophet ﷺ stood up to walk her back. When they reached the door of the masjid near the door of Umm Salamah, two men from the Ansar passed by and greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said to them, “Take it easy. This is Safiyyah bint Huyayy.” They said, “SubhanAllah, O Messenger of Allah!” (meaning they would never think anything improper). This was difficult for them to hear. The Prophet ﷺ then said, “Shaytan flows through the son of Adam like blood flows through the body, and I feared that he might throw something into your hearts.”

Bear in mind he said this during the last 10 nights of Ramadhan!

3⃣. Muslim reported on the authority of ‘Uthman ibn Abil-‘As that he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, Shaytan comes between me and my prayer and my recitation, confusing me.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “That is a Shaytan called Khinzab. If you sense him, seek refuge in Allah from him and lightly blow (dry spit) to your left three times.” He said, “I did that, and Allah removed him from me.”

There is no evidence suggesting that this Shaytan stops his whispering during Ramadhan!

4⃣. We witness cases of jinn possession during Ramadhan. You may sometimes see jinn speaking in different languages through the tongues of the people they have possessed.

Women receive the reward for fasting.

They receive the reward for housework.

They receive the reward for feeding those who are fasting.

Homes stand strong because of women’s patience and generosity.

O Allah, bless our mothers, our wives, and our daughters.

[Khutbah]: Stop Being Lazy in the Month of Ramadan by Abu Fajr AbdulFattaah bin Uthman

https://t.me/istiqamamasjid/9120
The last Ten nights are upon us!

So take heed of these timeless reminders from our beloved scholars of the past:

‎Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali رحمه الله said:

‎ "If you did not perform well in welcoming Ramadan, then you will do better bidding it farewell, for deeds are judged by their endings."

‎[Lataa'if al-Ma'aarif, p. 220]

‎Ibn al-Jawzi رحمه الله said:

‎"When a horse is near the finish line, it exerts its last energy to win the race. Do not let the final part of Ramadan be less than its beginning, for actions are judged by their endings."

‎[Sayd al-Khaatir, p. 466]

‎Al-Hasan al-Basri رحمه الله said:

‎"Improve your performance in what remains, and you will be forgiven for what has passed. Take the lesson from how Allah forgave people who repented sincerely and strove in the time remaining."

‎[Hilyat al-Awliya, 2/153]

‎Ibn Taymiyyah said رحمه الله:

‎"What matters is not how you started, but how you finish. If you wasted the first half of Ramadan, then compensate in the last half, especially the last ten nights, for that is where the true reward lies."

‎[Majmoo' al-Fataawa, 10/45]

‎Sufyan al-Thawri رحمه الله said:

‎ "If you were heedless at the start of Ramadan, do not remain heedless at its end. If you did not prepare well before the battle, then fight with all your strength in the battle itself."

‎[Sifat al-Safwah, 2/235]

‎Abdullah ibn Mas'ud رضي الله عنه said

‎"What remains is more valuable than what has passed. If you have not done much, then work hard now, for the doors of mercy are still open."

Avoid Holding A Mushaf During Tarawih Unnecessarily

Sheikh Ibn Baz rahimahullah
I do not know of any basis for this. What seems better is that the person should focus with humility and calmness in the prayer and not hold a mushaf. Instead, he should place his right hand over his left, as is the Sunnah: placing the right hand over the left palm, wrist, and forearm, and resting them on the chest. This is the stronger and better view.

Holding the mushaf distracts a person from these Sunnah actions. It may also distract his heart and eyes as he turns pages and follows the Ayahs, instead of listening to the imam.

So, what I believe is that leaving this practice is closer to the Sunnah: a person should listen attentively and remain quiet, without using a mushaf. If he has knowledge, he may correct the imam if the imam makes a mistake; otherwise someone else can correct him.

If the imam makes a mistake and no one corrects him, it does not harm the prayer if the mistake is outside Surah Al-Fatihah. It only affects the prayer if the mistake is in Al-Fatihah, because Al-Fatihah is an essential pillar of the prayer. But if the imam leaves out some Ayahs from another surah, it does not harm the prayer if no one behind him corrects him.

However, if one person carries a mushaf to help the imam when needed, that may be acceptable. But for everyone to carry a mushaf is contrary to the Sunnah.

*BENEFIT: When Does The Last Ten Begin?*

Question:
Some people get confused about when the last ten nights of Ramadan begin. Some think that the night prayers for the last ten nights start on the night of the twentieth of Ramadan. So when do they actually begin, and why do they start on the night of the twenty-first?

Sheikh Sa'd Al-Khathlan:
The last ten nights of Ramadan actually begin on the night of the twenty-first, not on the night of the twentieth. This means that the last ten nights start at sunset on the twentieth day of Ramadan.

The reason is that the twentieth day completes the middle ten days. The first ten days end with the tenth day. Then the eleventh day begins the middle ten days, which continue until the end of the twentieth day. After the sun sets on the twentieth day, the last ten nights of Ramadan begin.

Based on this, countries that started fasting on Wednesday will begin the last ten nights on Monday night (the night before Tuesday), not on Sunday night (the night before Monday), because Sunday night would still be the twentieth night. As we said, the last ten nights begin on the night of the twenty-first. For those who started fasting on Wednesday, the twenty-first night begins at sunset on the coming Monday.

As for countries that began fasting a day later, on Thursday, their last ten nights will begin one day later — on Tuesday night (the night before Wednesday).
