A genetic model study found that moms who consume certain food types (like apples or herbs) in early pregnancy can protect the brain health of their children and grandchildren as well. The study found that ursolic acid, a molecule present in apples and herbs was found to turn on a gene that creates a specific type of fat. This fat reduces the breakdown of communication cables (axons), essential for proper brain function. This type of fat was found to travel from the mother’s intestine to the eggs in the uterus, to protect axons in the next generation. Feeding the mother this fat was found to protect the axons of two subsequent generations.

The study was based on a huge dataset with over 10,000 people born between 2000 and 2002.
