There is no name I call you by, only a reverent hush in my throat where syllables go to kneel. I have not touched you, no, not even in my dream, though I've wandered each night through shape of your absence. My pilgrim. My ever-yet. Quiet ember whom I meet only in the margins of silence.
You were beautiful, I imagine, even the world made small altars from your elbow's bend. But, dearest, what if, in another cartography, your laugh were the tremble before fruit ripens? What if I were to find you where tomato vines tangle with myth, and the pulp beneath our skins turned feverish from imagined touch? I have built, within, a sanctum of waiting. The floor is riverbed. The walls: breath not yet spent. There, I seat you nightly beside a hearth of untold vows. You've never come, or should you come—and still, I set the table. There will be fields. Saffron-skinned and us. And maybe you will run, barefoot and bitter-sweet, and we'll press the red of our longing into earth until it turns into a sauce only lovers understand.
In dreams I've never dared, I saw you on an empty causeway. Will you ask, one dusk, whether I would love you more in death? And I, trembling with living hunger, would say no. I want you to breathe and err and wear socks that never match. Not dying—merely distant. The sky bruised to meet you. I did not run. I merely watched, carving each second into a psalm. Yes. I want you to forget my name and remember it again like a psalm. If I must remain the nameless one, let it be for the pleasure of crafting you from want.
And when I love, when I am allowed, it shall be you, my unsung, my starbone. In each letter I never send, I pour the red of waiting. No bride, no darling, not the polished beloved of men's poems, only the not-yet, the rare-to-come.
And I wait.
