Sometimes you want to trace the flow of your packets through your firewall. Most firewalls have built-in debugging mechanisms, which do however require extra knowledge to set up. For this reason a couple tools were developed to simplify the process.
With more recent distributions you can use https://github.com/aborrero/nftables-tracer with nftables filter syntax. This new packet classification tool replaced iptables in most Linux distributions and its adoption continues to grow. You may have not noticed it due to a compatibility layer iptables-nft, which translates iptables rules into its own ones. So, using nftables tracing methods for your iptables rules should be perfectly fine.
If your system still uses the legacy framework, you can go with https://github.com/x-way/iptables-tracer or https://github.com/akerouanton/iptables-tracer. Both tools have similar names and purpose, but use different packet marking mechanisms. They did however not work with iptables-nft in my case
