Have you ever read Kazuto Okada’s Ibitsu or Sundome? I read them when I was quite young, 16 years old—precisely 6 years ago. I’ve always found Kazuto Okada to be an odd manga writer; his works are ecchi and always centered around some form of masochism, yet there’s a depth to them that I could never fully understand. His endings are always tragic, maybe as a way to conclude the manga in a masochistic manner. His protagonists are always very weak, unable to defend themselves or their loved ones. The world always seems threatening, and the main character and his beloved (the girls on the covers) always feel so fragile in a world full of dangerous people.

The point is, I no longer see his work as just shallow ecchi. When I was 16, I was just a perverted teenager looking for an interesting ecchi romance to read, but what I found in Sundome and Ibitsu was existential dread. All his main characters feel hopeless, and they find a profound joy in living through their romances. It’s not just about being in love, but about depending on someone else to even exist. His heroines tend to be outwardly nice but deeply distorted in private, creating a sense of intimacy for the protagonist and the reader. (The pic is Sundome)

I started reflecting on his works again after thinking about Adam and Eve. Adam wants to love someone deeply and share the joy of loving with another person—that’s why he asked God for Eve. Eve, on the other hand, wants to feel that love as part of her existence. This is how I imagine the true nature of relationships between men and women: the man wants to love something deeply, while the woman wants to feel that love intensely, as well as being desired. This dynamic is very well represented in his works. (The pic is also Sundome)
