THE INTERVIEW OF OGUNUPDATE MEDIA WITH THE ALAIYELUWA OBA RASHEED ADEOYE ADESANYA FCA, ACMA, ADEMOKU II, THE OLISA OF IJĘBU-ODE.

Interviewer: I am joined now by Alaiyeluwa Oba R Adeoye Adesanya FCA., ACMA. Ademoku ll, The Olisa of Ijębu-Ode. Your Royal Majesty, thank you sir, for granting us this privilege.

Oba Olisa of Ijębu-Ode,
Thank you. You are welcome to my Palace,

Interviewer: Oba Olisa R. A Adesanya, I would like to address the recent controversy surrounding the stoppage of your salary by the Ijebu Traditional Council headed by Awujale of Ijebu Land.
Can you tell us more about what transpired?

Oba R. A Adesanya, Olisa of Ijębu-Ode:
I recall that the Awujale of Ijebuland had sought my opinion on a particular matter, and I provided him with my best, honest and candid views.
I did this based on our good relationship of so many years prior to that meeting.

Unknown to me, my response seemingly/ apparently did not go down well with him. It wasn't until a month later, that I discovered the repercussions of being truthful in our discussion and my advice.
Thereafter, my salary was abruptly stopped.

Interviewer: According to reports, your salary was stopped in August 2019, and upon inquiry, you were referred to the Ijebu Traditional Council (ITC) to resolve the issue. What was your experience with the ITC, and did you receive any explanation for the stoppage of your salary?

Oba R A Adesanya, Olisa of Ijębu-Ode:
The ITC is under the Chairmanship and management of the Awujale of Ijebuland. In reality, the Ijebu Traditional Council (ITC) being a traditional process, should be an extension of the Awujale's authority.

Thus, referring anyone to the Ijebu Traditional Council is essentially the same as asking them to receive a second or counter directive from the Awujale himself."

Interviewer: It's been alleged that the Awujale of Ijebu Land instructed the ITC to seize your stipends, citing a refusal to recognize your stool. How do you respond to these claims, and what historical context can you provide to support your position as the Olisa of Ijębu-Ode?

Oba R A Adesanya, Olisa of Ijębu-Ode:
Ah, yes. The Ogu'ja Olu-Isa, also known as the Olisa of Ijębu-Ode, has a rich history dating back over thousand years. The first Olisa, Okuwa Oluye Obanla Ajagemo and the the first Awujale of Ijębu-Land, Ogboroganja came to Ijebu kingdom together to settle at Ijębu-Ode with each with his crown.

While the Awujale has supremacy as the Awujale of Ijębu-Land, the Olisa of Ijębu-Ode since inception of the stool is the king (Mayor) of Ijębu-Ode.
Both thrones have been recognized as such by successive governments. It was like when Lagos was the capital of Nigeria and had the President also based in Lagos.

Interviewer: That is fascinating. Now, can you tell us about the current situation with your salary being stopped by the Awujale of Ijebu Land?

Oba R A Adesanya Olisa of Ijebu-Ode:
Yes, unfortunately, my salary has been stopped since August 2019. I take it more as the Olisa of Ijebu-ode no more recognised. When I inquired about it from the State Government, they referred me to the Ijebu Traditional Council (ITC) saying that my entitlements were blocked from getting to me. Further investigation revealed that the ITC in Council under the leadership of Awujale of Ijebuland, stopped the payment, under the view that he no longer recognises me and the existence of Olisa stool of Ijębu-Ode be scrapped notwithstanding that the Olisa Royal Dynasty is made of seven (7) ruling houses in Ijebuode that had been in existence for hundreds of years

Interviewer: That must be very challenging for you sir.
Have you tried to resolve the issue with the Awujale?

Oba R A Adesanya, Olisa of Ijebu-Ode:
Yes, I have written to him several times, reminding him of the long history and significance of the Olisa throne. However, he has seemingly insisted, in his personal view, that I am no longer a king in negation of history, tradition and law.
4👍1
This is despite the fact that the installation of Olisa Throne holders did passed through several traditional processes and did obtained the approval of the Ogun State government and Staff of Office of all Olisa since the creation of Ogun State in 1976, had been handed over by the then Ogun State Governors or their representatives (Minimum the Hon. Commissioner for Chieftaincy) and not by any Chief or Oba.

Definitely, the Awujale of Ijębu-Land, HRM S K Adetona, is my traditional senior but I don't think he can unilaterally scrap the long existing Olisa Office/Throne. Similarly, there are also traditional processes to follow in the removal of the existing Olisa and the approval of the Governor must be obtained.

I think that Olisa traditional Throne should be cherish and safeguarded as demanded by the people and cannot be done away with for no justification or on personal differences or personal supremacy urge.
It is just like our President waking up, to scrap a State Government unduly under civilian regime.

Interviewer: As the Olisa of Ijębu-Ode, what do you believe is the root cause of this dispute, and how do you think it can be resolved? Do you think the intervention of the Executive Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dr. Dapo Abiodun, MFR, is necessary to address this issue?

Oba R A Adesanya, Olisa of Ijebu-Ode:
It is my firm believe that Chieftaincy recognitions, rights and privileges, especially Town Obas, should not be at the whims caprice of the paramount Rulers only.
As doing so, could reduce the integrity of the other arms of traditional institution as to an article for sale or acquirable by friendship or patronage.

I think the wealth of knowledge of our forefathers, in their wealth of knowledge in the administration of towns and villages should be considered and substained.
Though things are revolving, I believe in that slogan that says "Absolute power currupts and currupts absolutely" and should be guided against in all process. Absolute power can sometimes be dangerous if left unchecked or uncontrolled or balanced.

A situation where for whatever personal differences, a senior Oba bypassing traditional process and laws, to do as so wished, I think, is not advisable. I would not advise same to be allowed by me against my juniors in traditional settings.

I wish to inform you that despite his seemingly misunderstanding of me, I still hold the Awujale of Ijebuland in high esteem.

However, I don't think it is just for me to wake up and hear that my Royal throne no longer exist and my salary for same being stopped. I think we are all human and I think it is a bit hard on me, my throne, my people and I believe it should be handled better to reflect as demanded by our tradition as Yorubas.

In my belief in my people and highly placed Ijebu citizens, I had involved them in the pass years and on several occasions to have the matter resolved and highlighting my innocence. I did what is expected of an ordinary citizen (forgetting my status as an Oba and high age), in my respect to Awujale and to have the matter resolved, but only for the issue to be reneged back again later.

In as much I do not want the Executive Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dr. Dapo Abiodun, MFR, to be bothered with local issues but, as the Chief Executive of the State, he cannot be left out because of his responsibility to ensure that the rights and privileges of all traditional rulers in the state are respected and protected.

Interviewer: Finally, what message would you like to convey to your people, the Ogun State government, and the Awujale of Ijębu-Land regarding this matter?

Oba R A Adesanya, Olisa of Ijębu-Ode:
To my people, I would like to assure them that I remain committed to serving them and upholding the dignity of the Olisa throne.

I totally agree with the Princes and Princesses of the Olisa Dynasty that the Olisa throne is a revered institution that deserves respect and due recognition. I join them that it should not be scrapped, for whatsoever reason.
👍1
To the government, I urge them to intervene in this matter as may be required, ensure that justice is served to all, ensuring that the traditional process is upheld always and traditional setting is not personalised nor open for sale..

To the Awujale, I will like to remind him that I have my greatest respect for him, as my senior in traditional setting and as Awujale of Ijębu-Land.

I will love to bring our ages status to bear, Awujale is over ninety (90) years old and I am over eighty five (85) years old, with he ruling for sixty (60) years while I have been on the throne as Olisa for about forty (40) years. I believe that none of us lack the exposure of the history of our traditions. I believe it should be our responsibility to uphold and safeguard it for generations to come.

Interviewer:Thank you, Your Royal Highness, for sharing your perspective on this contentious issue.

Oba R A Adesanya, Olisa of Ijebu-Ode:
You're welcome. It is my pleasure sharing my view and shedding light on the rich history and significance of the Olisa throne.

I hope that this interview will be used to enrich and promote a better understanding of the traditional institutions in Ijębu-Land and in Ogun in particular. Thank you once again for having me.
God bless our dear nation.

The project, named "Governor Abiodun Vocational Center, was officially commissioned today by the Executive Chairman of the local government, Hon. Olusola Akinbode, held at the local government secretariat in Ayetoro.

The project, which was formerly a dilapidated structure, has been transformed into a functional and inspiring training hub to serve youth, women, and artisans interested in vocational skills such as Adire (tie and dye) Kampala making and many more.

The commissioning ceremony was well-attended by political leaders, party stakeholders, community members, youth groups, which included Chief Joju Fadairo, APC local government party Chairman, Dr.Adekunle Adeosun, Hon. Sunday Kojeku, Hon. Mrs Bukola Omoyayi, Hon. Ibrahim Shaba, Hon. Kayode Abiola, Director of Ministry of Culture and tourism, Mr. Emmanuel Ikwe amongst others.

While speaking at the commissioning, the local government Chairman, Hon. Olusola Akinbode commended Hon. Ola Aina for being a progressive voice and aligning with Governor Dapo Abiodun administration's vision in youth development.

Hon. Akinbode described Ola Aina as a new breed of politician who keyed into the vision of Dapo Abiodun, which is focused on grassroots empowerment through vocational training.

He said "The local government had already trained over 15,000 individuals in Adire and Kampala making, even without a standard training facility, but with the Governor Abiodun Vocational Center now in place, it would project a massive increase in outreach."

His words "I appreciate His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for giving us the platform to operate as a local government. And I want to use this medium to appreciate Honourable Ola Aina for being a new breed of politician in this generation."

"Ola Aina keyed into the vision of His Excellency, which is one of our mandates on vocational training."

"We have been able to train over 15,000 people in Kampala and Adire making, and Ola Aina visited us, he keyed into that vision by renovating one of our dilapidated buildings so that it can be used as the Dapo Abiodun Vocational Centre".

"This is the first of its kind in this axis of the Yewa North Local Government Secretariat. So, Ola Aina started on a very good note and he should keep the ball rolling.", Hon. Akinbode concluded.

While speaking on the rationale behind the renovation project, Hon. Amb. Oladayo Aina expressed gratitude for the opportunity to give back to his local government and credited Governor Dapo Abiodun as the inspiration behind the initiative.

According to him "His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun, inspired me, the Governor has been empowering people and prioritizing vocational training across the state."

"I came into the Yewa North Secretariat, saw the poor state of the building, and realized it could be restored and used to uplift our people through skills acquisition."

Ola Aina therefore thanked Governor Abiodun and the local government Chairman, Dr. Akinbode for given him opportunity to add value to the community.

He said "I want to thank the Chairman of this council, Dr. Olushola Akinbode, for giving me the opportunity to be able to add value. Because some people will just not even let you do it. They will be like, 'Don’t come and take our shine.'

On his parts, a renowned elder stateman, Chief Joju Fadairo revealed how he personally encouraged Ola Aina to shift his developmental focus from Lagos to his home base in Ogun State.

He said "I encouraged him to come home. He was doing a lot in Lagos, but I told him, 'If you do it for your people, they will appreciate you, pray for you, and you'll find fulfillment.

I am happy he listened. What he has done here is just the beginning for the Yewa people, Chief Fadairo said.
