Jason Arday was allegedly (we always need this qualifier these days), a Cambridge professor of sociology who recently resigned from his post following allegations of plagiarism in his work and intense media scrutiny of some his more outlandish biographical claims. Shortly after resigning, he – again allegedly killed himself.

Let’s talk about…the surge in food warnings and recalls
Earlier today, NBC News reported “at least 55 people” had fallen ill after eating contaminated alfalfa sprouts across 15 US states.
This is just the latest one of these.
It started last month, when a Cyclospora outbreak causing explosive diarrhoea sickened thousands across 41 states – this was linked to lettuce, oregano and other fresh produce. Those cases are just trending down now.
On August 5th, the CDC announced a salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeño peppers.

Let me first explain what I mean by “top-down and bottom-up.” I use this phrase often in my psychotherapy work. I believe most therapy is designed to be top-down. This is where symptoms are treated, but not the cause of the symptoms.

It is a commonplace that a steady diet of the mass media can rot the brain and so fill one’s mind with nonsense that a creative thought becomes impossible. The Internet, television, film, and miniseries addictions are widespread and keep electronic minds flashing in and out and everywhere so as to avoid that much maligned word “boredom,” the feared state where real thinking can germinate.

The Tale of Two Greedy Landlords
Once upon a time in a land far away and in a time of plenty there were two rich and prosperous Landlords who each owned large and spacious adjoining buildings wherein many people lived.
The apartments were warm and comfortable and every week there was a market where grain was brought from Landlord B’s land and fruit and meat and vegetables from Landlord A’s. While wood from Landlord B’s copses kept the Communal Woodpile stocked with seasoned logs.

So I was having a cup of tea at the table—well, the computer desk, if the truth be known—and looking out the window, thinking, This world is insane.
Of course, I do that on a regular basis most mornings when the sun begins and the night ends and all the creatures switch positions: the chattering of raccoons replaced by birds being bloody happy and singing.

I’m sure all reading this can remember the countless sci-fi movies and TV shows (and books too) where the ultra-intelligent being from outer space visits Earth with some profound gift for mankind and is outright rejected, or ultimately killed, due to misunderstanding and fear.

Hoping for Smooth Sailing with the Sea Gulls and Thoreau
Here where I sit once again looking easterly to the vast sea, the wind and the waves and winding vistas along the north Atlantic coast drown out trivial thoughts. We are here for a few days to empty our minds of trash, as a vacation should so vacate.
Unlike many, we are lucky for this opportunity.

An important focus of my work in recent years has been showing how authority, exploitation, empire and industry are all merely aspects of one overall process.
Looking back, I should acknowledge that a significant chunk of that understanding came from the late Richard Hunt (1933-2012).
In the 1990s I read his magazine Alternative Green, corresponded with him and even visited him at his home in Oxford on a couple of occasions.
This was not some grandiose mansion on university grounds, by the way, but a tiny flat in a 1960s shopping centre!
