"Bolt Threads" is a start-up that makes bio-based leather alternative from mycelium mushrooms, which obviously are less harmful to the environment.
Mycelium is a vast, renewable, interconnected web naturally found beneath forest floors.
Mushroom leather is strong, flexible, and durable, just like traditional leather. It is also waterproof.
It is biodegradable and non-toxic.
The mycelium used to make Mylo is grown in less than two weeks using just mulch, air, and water in a vertical agriculture facility that is 100% powered by renewable energy.
The current estimated price of mushroom leather lands at about $50 per square foot. Which is about the same as high-end animal leather.
The brand already collaborated with: Adidas, Stella McCartney, lululemon, etc.

- Take donated clothes for free
- Use sewing machines & overlocker for free
- Use a loom (make a carpet) also for free

What is the problem with H&M? Part 1
Someone might say:
"Oh, they have a nice recycling program, they also have “Conscious Choice” collection - that’s partially made from sustainable or recycled materials."
Well...Let’s check the facts:
- H&M is a Fast Fashion Brand. Second largest in the WORLD after Zara by sales volume. It’s in the Brand’s Identity to sell low-quality products more, faster, and cheaper.
- H&M produces an estimated 3 billion garments per year, much of which goes unsold or is quickly discarded.
- What is the point of H&M's sustainable “Conscious Choice" collection if the brand is burning its unsold clothes?!
Just think about it.
- Don’t trust their recycling program "Close the loop":
In Russia, H&M had the same system i.e. you bring them your clothes, and they give you a coupon on the next purchase. On their official site, it was written that they collaborate with I: CO company, which recycles clothes in Germany.
Unfortunately for the brand, one eco-activist conducted a huge investigation and it turned out that for about 4 years clothes collected from H&M stores (155 in Russia) were not sent for recycling, but were sold from one of the warehouses on the sites like Carousell. Only after this scandal, did H&M change its recycling program in Russia.

- You bring to H&M your clothes so they can give you a coupon for your next purchase and sell more low-quality products.
Their recycling program in general aims to give customers a way to feel morally righteous about buying more than what they need and treating clothing as disposable.

- H&M’s "Conscious" collection is not about sustainability: (Part 2)
- Recent investigation proved that pieces of the Brand’s Conscious Collection were advertised as using less water to manufacture when they actually use more. A dress was listed on H&M’s website as using 20% less water, turned to be used 20% more water than average!
- H&M’s Conscious collection was found to contain a higher share of damaging synthetic materials than its main line (72% compared to 61%).
Fast Fashion brands call products “sustainable” and take back old clothes for recycling only to induce customers to buy more, and — most important — exploit our collective climate guilt to charge us more for same-quality clothes.
It just a couple of scandals with H&M, there are many more.
To conclude, I would like to say that for Fast Fashion brands, sustainability and recycling are just a trend they are following.
Try to avoid or reduce the number of products you’re buying there as much as possible. Choose small, local brands instead.
This post is not only about H&M, but about other Fast Fashion Brands like Zara, Cotton On, Asos and etc. that are catching the trend of sustainability.

Thrift store closing sale
Today I visited the Upcircle project, which is located at Cheng San Community Club. Their term at this location is going to the end and they are having a closing sale.
They work last 2 days - 27, 28 August from 11am to 7pm
What you can find there: Mostly women's clothes & shoes on the hills, men’s shirts and pants, books & some household items.
Books $2
Women's clothes $5-10
Men's clothes $10
I bought 3 items for $20 (3rd one was for free): two Zara cotton shirts and one dress from Ciel.
They have clothes from Mango, Love Bonito, and many other fast fashion brands, I have also seen Guess and Calvin Klein pieces.
If you tag your friends in their Instagram post, you can redeem a $10 voucher (no minimum Spend!). More promotions are mentioned in the photos attached to the post.

Prices on some fabrics starts from 2 dollars😱
I bought amazing jersey fabrics in the range 2-6 dollars per meter (the previous price was about $20-30 per meter!).
It's even cheaper than that in China town, where the price for jersey starts from $10 (if you know places where it is even less — share in the comments)🙏
There are discount in every section: home/ apparel /accessories/ sewing machines etc.
Most of the prices 30-40% and even 50% less.
I bought in total about 8 different high-quality fabrics and paid around 30 dollars!
