Dear SPMS Family,

We are pleased to invite you to the SPMS Odyssey Public Lecture & Fireside Chat, an exciting academic event featuring two distinguished physicists, including a 2016 Physics Nobel Laureate.

๐Ÿ“… Date: Tuesday, 13 January 2026
๐Ÿ•” Time: 5.00pm โ€“ 6.30pm
๐Ÿ“ Venue: SPMS LT 3
Light refreshments will be provided.

Public Lecture: Upper Limit of Crop Yields Determined from Thermodynamics
Speaker: Prof Wu Congjun (Westlake University)
How far can crop yields be pushed, even in principle? In this lecture, Prof Wu explores how fundamental thermodynamic constraints โ€” rather than biological mechanisms alone โ€” impose universal upper bounds on the efficiency of converting solar energy into chemical energy in crops. This perspective leads to striking predictions about yield ceilings and offers a physicistโ€™s lens on an important real-world problem at the interface of physics, biology, and sustainability.

Fireside Chat
Guest Speaker: Prof Duncan Haldane
2016 Nobel Prize in Physics | Princeton University
Following the lecture, Prof Wu will be joined by Prof Duncan Haldane for a fireside chat, where they will reflect on their research journeys, the role of fundamental theory in modern physics, and broader questions about scientific curiosity, interdisciplinarity, and discovery.

๐ŸŽŸ Registration is required.

We hope to see you there!

Hi SPMS Family!

MH4310 Coding Theory has not been offered in 2 AYs (AY 24/25 and AY25/26) as the professor in charge is on leave of absence. This has resulted in the AY22/23 batch of math students not being able to take the course during their undergraduate studies at SPMS, and we are hoping to restart the course this coming AY to avoid repeating this unfortunate scenario for subsequent batches.

Coding theory is the study of designing mathematical mechanisms to ensure data fidelity in the presence of perturbation causing errors.
MH4310 Coding Theory is available as an MPE for the Pure and Applied Math tracks (for batch AY23/24 and before), and counts towards the Computational Mathematics and Modelling as well as Pure Mathematics specialisations (for batch AY24/25 and after).

If you are interested in taking this course in AY 26/27 (Sem 1/2), please fill up this petition to get SPMS to find another faculty member to teach the course.

Thank you!

Dear SPMS Students,

We are excited to invite you to an exclusive study trip to Switzerland from 27 July to 1 August 2026. This trip offers a unique opportunity to explore some of the world's leading scientific institutions, including:

๐Ÿ”ฌ CERN โ€“ Worldโ€™s largest particle physics laboratory
๐Ÿซ ETH Zurich โ€“ Home to many famous physicists, including Albert Einstein and John von Neumann
๐Ÿงฒ Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) โ€“ Switzerlandโ€™s largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences
โš›๏ธ Swiss Plasma Centre (SPC) โ€“ One of the world's leading centres for plasma physics and nuclear fusion research

This is a rare chance to gain first-hand exposure to groundbreaking research and innovation while experiencing Switzerlandโ€™s vibrant academic and scientific culture.

In previous years, this trip was opened to PHMS students only, but we are opening it up to the whole SPMS undergraduate cohort this year, so don't miss your chance! Since you have participated in the Odyssey Research Programme before, please indicate this under 'research records' when submitting the form below.

SPMS will sponsor each selected student $2500 for travel and accommodation expenses, to be reimbursed before the trip. The trip is estimated to cost $4000. If you are interested, please register your interest by 1 May (Friday), 23:59 via this form. More details on the itinerary will be shared in an information session to selected participants.

For inquiries, feel free to reach out to us via email at spmsodysseycomm@e.ntu.edu.sg, or DM Jamie on Telegram at @jamie_meows. Thank you.
