What is being presented as a case involving forged Lebanese passports allegedly issued to Iranian operatives and members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) could have a far more serious impact: undermining confidence in the Lebanese state itself — and, of course, targeting Hezbollah and its social environment.

The campaign amplified by Gulf media outlets, including Al Arabiya and Al Hadath, relies heavily on references to an
“American source”
and unnamed security information, without publicly presenting criminal evidence or verifiable documents.

🔻 Why does this matter?

An anonymous source is not evidence. But when a narrative is repeatedly attributed to an unnamed American or security source, it acquires the appearance of established fact, allowing it to spread internationally before its basis is independently verified.

And the damage does not stop at Hezbollah or Iran.

When Lebanese state institutions, their employees, and General Security personnel are portrayed as part of a systematic passport-forgery network, the accusation inevitably reaches the institutions responsible for issuing and safeguarding Lebanese identity documents.

The potential consequence is borne by the ordinary Lebanese citizen: growing doubts about the reliability and credibility of the Lebanese passport itself, affecting people who have nothing to do with the political conflict.

For years, Western-backed political discourse has called for the
“restoration of the Lebanese state,”
strengthening its institutions, and consolidating its sovereignty.

Yet when these institutions are perceived as operating outside a preferred geopolitical framework, the narrative can suddenly change: institutions previously presented as symbols of state authority are recast as corrupt, infiltrated, or criminal.

📌 But what does the Lebanese state actually say?

The Lebanese General Directorate of General Security has explicitly rejected these allegations.

According to its official response, previous administrative violations had been investigated by the Public Prosecutor at the Court of Cassation, those responsible were prosecuted, and judicial sentences were issued against them.

More importantly, according to General Security, ongoing audits have not established the existence of a continuing and systematic practice of issuing forged travel documents to foreign operatives or agents.

The Directorate also warned that the repeated circulation of reports lacking reliable sources serves political objectives aimed at undermining Lebanon’s national credibility.

🎯 And this is where the broader issue begins.

Passports, civil registries, and identity documents may appear to be purely bureaucratic matters. But amid a regional conflict, such files can become instruments of information warfare.

The process begins with an accusation.

Then comes international suspicion.

Then come demands for tighter “security compliance procedures,” external oversight, or sanctions.
