Washington has just approved a potential $5 billion arms package for Saudi Arabia, centered on more than 10,000 JDAM-ER guidance kits, along with thousands of 500-pound and 2,000-pound bombs.
The principal contractor is Boeing.
And this is not an isolated transaction.
Earlier this year, Washington also approved a potential $9 billion sale of PAC-3 MSE missile-defense systems to Riyadh.
In other words, Saudi Arabia is not simply buying weapons.
It is deepening its dependence on the American security architecture at precisely the moment the Middle East is entering one of its most dangerous periods.
For years, Saudi Arabia was deeply involved in the Yemen war, while American weapons and military support formed an important part of the Saudi-led coalition’s military capabilities.
So the question remains:
When Washington sells Riyadh increasingly sophisticated strike capabilities, where exactly is the line between “defense” and the ability to project force?
The language is always the same:
deterrence.
regional stability.
protection from threats.
But weapons do not exist in a vacuum.
They become instruments of policy.
Here lies the deeper regional contradiction.
Saudi Arabia possesses enormous financial resources and significant diplomatic influence.
Yet billions continue to flow into advanced American weapons systems while Gaza and Palestine remain at the center of the region’s political and humanitarian crisis.

WASHINGTON DOESN’T JUST SELL WEAPONS — IT SELLS A SECURITY SYSTEM
The deeper issue is not whether Saudi Arabia should possess JDAMs or missile defenses.
The issue is who controls the strategic ecosystem in which those weapons operate.
If your aircraft, precision munitions, missile defenses, maintenance, training, logistics and interoperability all depend heavily on one external power, then you may have increased your military capability without achieving equivalent strategic autonomy.
And that leads to the uncomfortable question:
Is Saudi Arabia buying security from Washington — or buying deeper dependence on Washington?
But it cannot buy sovereignty.
Strategic autonomy is not measured by how many American weapons a country possesses.
It is measured by how freely that country can act when its interests diverge from those of the power supplying them.

Jamil Al-Sayyed: We Are Already in the Worst
Following the destruction of Ghandour Hospital and the Finance Ministry building in Nabatieh, MP Jamil Al-Sayyed directly criticized President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, questioning the value of Lebanon remaining committed to the “Framework Agreement” while Israeli attacks continue.
