⚠️ JUST IN: What happened to Zcash?

Security researcher Taylor Hornby pointed Claude Opus 4.8 at Zcash's Orchard shielded pool code on May 29 and found a critical counterfeiting vulnerability within 24 hours of the model's release. The bug had survived years of review by world-class cryptographers. An emergency soft fork and the NU6.2 hard fork patched it by June 3.

The worst part: nobody knows if someone already exploited it. Because Orchard is a privacy pool, there is no cryptographic way to verify whether counterfeit ZEC was minted between May 2022 and today.

EXPLANATION (for interested people):
Zcash's Orchard pool uses zero-knowledge proofs to hide transaction details. A constraint in the circuit code was written too loosely, allowing an attacker to pass mathematically invalid inputs through an elliptic-curve check that should have rejected them. In practice this meant unlimited ZEC could be minted from nothing, completely indistinguishable from real coins. Hornby built a working exploit on testnet in a single day. The same privacy that makes Orchard valuable is also what makes past exploitation impossible to rule out.

🛡 EXPLOIT: One laptop took down Humanity Protocol for $36M

An employee's laptop held enough Gnosis Safe keys to hit approval thresholds on both Ethereum and BSC alone. The attacker drained 141M H on Ethereum and minted 200M H on BSC. H token crashed 89%, from $0.73 to $0.08.

ZachXBT initially flagged it as "possibly staged" citing unusual pre-hack OTC activity, but later walked it back.

EXPLANATION:
Humanity's bridges used multisig wallets, meaning multiple key approvals are required before any contract change. The whole point is to spread keys across different people and devices so no single compromise can move funds. Here, enough keys were stored on one laptop to cross the threshold on both chains. The attacker seized ProxyAdmin control, upgraded bridge contracts to malicious versions, drained the Ethereum vault in one transaction, then added an unlimited mint function on BSC and printed 200M tokens directly to their own wallet. All sold into the market immediately. Not a smart contract bug: a basic opsec failure.

AudiA6 was a mixer-as-a-service that laundered over €336M between 2022 and 2025, marketed on underground forums to ransomware actors looking to cash out stolen crypto fast. Customers sent dirty funds, got clean ones back within an hour, minus a 3-10% cut. The same group also ran Dark2Web, a dark web forum connecting cybercriminals worldwide.

On June 10, two admins of Ukrainian and Russian nationality were arrested in Georgia. 25 domains seized, 30+ servers down, 80+ vehicles confiscated, Telegram accounts blocked. A third member had already been arrested in Poland in September 2025, whose seized devices led investigators to the rest.

EXPLANATION:
AudiA6 operated by opening thousands of fraudulent exchange accounts using stolen or purchased identities, many linked to Russian-speaking intermediaries embedded inside legitimate exchanges. Criminals sent stolen crypto to wallets controlled by the group; funds were routed through 6,000+ money mule accounts across multiple layers. Within roughly an hour, "cleaned" crypto came out the other end with the original trail broken. Fake company domains were used to pass KYC checks at real exchanges, keeping the whole infrastructure hidden in plain sight.
