🇺🇸Northrop incurs losses on the B-21 program

Northrop Grumman has incurred losses of $477 million during the development of the B-21 Raider bomber. Moreover, these losses relate only to the first quarter of this year. The customer acknowledged the expenses as justified.

According to Northrop management, receiving this amount will allow the company to cover unforeseen costs for materials, as well as speed up the production of the aircraft. However, the speeches of the president and CEO of the corporation, Kathy Worden, on this topic were very vague.

On the one hand, Northrop management refers to inflation, which led to an increase in the purchase prices of structural materials. On the other hand, some redesign of the bomber design is mentioned. At the same time, the costs of changing production technologies exceed the increase in material costs. However, according to Worden, this is a one-time change, and the US Air Force command agreed with him. The financial receipts will be distributed over 2026, 2027 and 2028.

The company is currently fulfilling the second contract for the initial production batch. Three aircraft are currently involved in testing. The progress of the tests has not been reported, but Worden “hinted” that changes to the B-21 design are being made based on the test results. There are no prototypes – after the test program is completed, all three aircraft will be “reconfigured” into full-fledged combat vehicles.

The current US Air Force plan calls for the purchase of 100 B-21s. However, some combat unit commanders and Air Force leaders have suggested that more than 100 bombers are needed for a “dynamic world situation.” Estimates range from 140 to 200 aircraft.

By 2040, the B-21 should replace the Rockwell B-1 Lancer (104 aircraft built) and Northrop B-2 Spirit (21 aircraft built). It is possible that later the B-21 will also replace the veteran Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, which has been in service for 70 years.
