Two expressions of the same ritual logic: Christianity inhabiting a seasonal system (left), and Yule operating on its own terms (right).
Christmas as Ritual Season (Not Doctrinal Feast)
Even among committed Christians, there is no consensus on the origins or historical grounding of Christmas symbols. What is defended is the season itself, not the accuracy of its explanations — further evidence that Christmas operates primarily as a ritual season, not a doctrinal feast.
This becomes clear not through speculative “Pagan gotcha” arguments, but by listening to Christians themselves.
Some explicitly acknowledge that Christmas customs were adapted from earlier seasonal practices to facilitate conversion. Others accept that the date does not correspond to the historical birth of Jesus, insisting instead that “it symbolizes it.” Still others reject pre-Christian continuities outright — while nevertheless continuing to observe the same seasonal behaviors.
That word — symbolizes — is decisive. Symbols do not require historical precision; rituals require only repetition, timing, and social participation.
Ritual Time vs. Historical Time
Ethnographic and folkloric sources consistently show that midwinter was treated as a period of heightened ritual efficacy, long before Christian theology attached new narratives to it.
Nils Lid documents Scandinavian Yule as a complex of ritual acts involving food left untouched for unseen guests, offerings to household and field spirits, fertility divination, and calendrical forecasting tied explicitly to Christmas night and morning. These practices persist well into the Christian period with little theological reinterpretation.
In Finland and the wider Finno-Baltic sphere, Andreas Nordberg records Christmas as a threshold season used for agricultural omens, weather divination, and future prosperity — functions incompatible with a purely commemorative feast.
Douglas Hill's broad comparative survey shows Christmas repeatedly appearing in European folk belief as a power-bearing date:
• weather and harvest omens tied to Christmas moonlight and sunlight
• beliefs about births on Christmas conferring special abilities
• prohibitions against cutting certain trees or burning specific woods during the season
• ritual bread baked on Christmas Day believed to cure illness
None of these depend on the Nativity narrative. They depend on timing.
Just as Italians name weekdays after planetary gods without conscious pagan intent (lunedì, martedì…), Yule — now called Christmas — operates as a functional inheritance rather than a remembered one. The ritual persists even when its older meanings are no longer articulated — or are actively denied.
Hill notes this pattern explicitly: practices once embedded in Pagan seasonal rites are not erased by Christianity, but reframed, blessed, or tolerated as long as they no longer threaten doctrine. The blessing of ploughs, beating of bounds, and seasonal use of greenery survive precisely because they serve social and agricultural continuity, not theology.
Even attempts to reinterpret symbols — such as identifying the evergreen tree with the biblical burning bush — confirm the point: the ritual object predates the explanation.
Therefore it may be reasonably concluded that Christmas did not replace an earlier ritual season. It inhabited Yule.
The Church supplied narrative and doctrine; the calendar supplied power. What endured was not belief, but practice — repeated annually at the moment when the year itself appeared most vulnerable.
That is why Christmas still works, even when no one agrees on why.

Excerpt from "Ethnographic Journeys"
Seeing how the white British have completely abandoned the Hare Krishnas was really eye opening. We wondered if was an unconscious “racism” by these anti-racist lefties. The more that Indians came to dominate, the less the British felt comfortable?
Or is it because nearly everything about Hinduism, despite an Indo-European root, is overtly foreign?
Next I thought about George Harrison's role in getting the Hare Krishnas set up in England with the donation of the Tudor manor.
Looking at the hordes of foreigners flocking to this central location, the only visual comparison I could think of was swarms of insects. It's as if Harrison provided a nest for a queen bee and now there is a thriving, buzzing hive.

Excerpt from "Ethnographic Journeys" regarding George Harrison's donation of a Tudor Era manor to the Hare Krishnas:
The building is a true piece of English heritage. Do any of these Hindu visitors care a jot about the English heritage and history of this place? Imagine if this building was used to house an English folk culture collection instead. My husband noted that if you went up to these people and started asking them if they know who George Harrison is, a large number won't have any idea. Don't know, don't care.
I wonder how he would feel about his “legacy” being used as an immigration funnel. The number of foreign accents among the people running the place shows that this organization is certainly being used as a chain-migration hub. They are most certainly getting large numbers of visas processed. His name is on signs around the grounds like a big fat white bird raising the cuckoo's egg in his own nest.

Excerpt from Ethnographic Journeys, comparing forced diversity in European ballet vs purely ethnic Chinese dance performance Shen Yun:
Shen Yun is a dance performance that highlights China's ancient roots in a beautifully spiritual way. All of the dancers are ethnic Chinese, which adds to the aesthetic. You can't help but compare with European ballet performances which now are forced to diversify. It ruins the experience because different races have different body types. Not to mention the double standards about when the term “cultural appropriation” is applied.
Ballet has historically been known for being brutal about body type standards. It's sad for the dancers who don't make the cut, but the uniformity of body type is part of the beauty of the aesthetic. Busty Turkish women have plenty of other career opportunities open to them. But, you won't see Shen Yun letting them perform!

Alfons Mucha and Adolf Hitler?
Working on my next essay. I promised a piece on Alfons Mucha. But, I felt it was important to go into the ethnic problems under the Austro-Hungarian Empire to give some context. This bleeds into ethnic nationalism movements. And surprizing similarities between Mucha and Hitler 🤯
Mucha may have been horrified by the comparison, nevertheless they are both men shaped by many of the same cultural, social, political issues and movements of their day! Both men started exploring other career paths in their youth. Ultimately, both men peaked with going all in dedicating their life’s work to the preservation of their Folk.
The Czechs and the Germans felt their ethnic groups were oppressed under the imperialism of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Both groups fomented ethnic nationalist movements to stand up for their own ethnic survival. World War II cannot be understood without this key background information.
I aim to upload this by Saturday www.subscribestar.com/OakwiseBecoming

It was researching my surname family history that I discovered we had been Zipser Saxons, from the region referred to as Zips by German speakers and Spiš in the Slovak language. This solved the mystery of why the generations passed down a German identity but genealogy records confused the disconnected descendants when immigration records stated Austria on some documents and Kingdom of Hungary on others. It’s because Germans were settled in pockets all around central and Eastern Europe for centuries. At the time my ancestor left, Slovakia was under the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
This gave me a historical framework by which to place events which led up to WWII into context which modern fake history purveyors leave out. Your average dumb dumb just swallows the post-war propaganda without any understanding that there is decades of relevant background information in the cultural situation leading up to the events of the 1930s.
I’m going into some of this in my next essay.

Germans had been invited to settle in Eastern European kingdoms for centuries since the middle ages for their in-demand skills. Entire villages were known to be Saxon and spoke the German language.
There is a hidden history about the suppression and persecution of Germans from the 19th century until what amounts to an ethnocide after World War II. What remained of the German stock of Czechoslovakia would have assimilated into Slavic culture and downplayed their German identity until their descendants completely forgot it.
Indeed, my own grandmother told me that her Bavarian father refused to teach her his language for her own safety – in America.
So one does wonder how much the similarities between Czech and German customs is down to shared Aryan substrata or due to a more recent footprint left by the Sudetenland and other Eastern-settled Germans.

I'll go out on an unpopular limb here. But it's important to get info out there that this Greenland thing is not crazy or out of nowhere.
Unlike those who don't scan the news every morning and night, I've been reading about Russian ships and subs testing the waters of Britain for years. This has had a massive increase in recent years. The wimpy left British gov does nothing but keep an eye on it.
How do you think they are getting into the Atlantic?
Look at the map of Russian arctic bases vs NATO bases!
None of the other NATO countries thought it was important to pay in the full 5% GDP until Trump raised hell.
It's time to reset the board. Recent memo shows Trump Admin's plan to support nationalist parties in Europe. It's time to walk away from Bolshevik EU, draw a line, and say those with our vision welcome to join.
Meantime, Russia is bulking up in the Arctic and already taking territory in the East. EU is all talk. But they refuse to bulk up defenses.
Greenland under USA makes sense.

Latest essay goes into the history of ethno-nationalism in and around the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the lead up to the WWs - crucial info for understanding the TRUE story of WWII!
"Over the years, all of these cultural assimilation or appeasement attempts either exacerbated or simply existed within the wider push and pull of the ethnic identity politics of the day. Austria-Hungary had the misfortune of being an exercise in regional imperialism during an age of rising, and quite impassioned, ethnic nationalism. Needless to say, very few of the resident ethnic groups were happy with the situation and ethnic nationalist sentiment was the zeitgeist amongst all of them.
What is interesting is that each ethnic group truly saw themselves victimized by the Empire and its various attempts to force cultural unity. "

Discussing the Nationalist zeitgeist before the WWs:
"It is well understood that the assassination of the heir to the Austrian-Hungarian throne, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, was the catalyst for the start of World War I.
The presentation of both world wars never adequately explains the ethnic tensions on the ground that were fermenting in the decades leading up to them – even when nationalism is discussed in relation to the rise of the National Socialist German Worker’s Party (NSDAP or Nazi Party) in Germany.
Indeed, it was a Bosnian Serb nationalist who killed the Austrian Archduke, demonstrating that zealous ethnic nationalism was rampant wide across Europe and not something reserved only for the German mindset."

The reasons for the rise in nationalism (20th century) are complex. But, mostly, it was because your average working class or peasant European felt that their toes were being stepped on, usually by elites who failed to understand them as an ethnic group and did not respect their right to maintain their cultural identity while they saw standards of living reduced and life become a general struggle.
In the case of Austria-Hungary, in the few short decades of its existence, while under the intention to create cohesion through shared language and identity, the ruling class managed only to inflame ethnic tensions, stoke true ethnic nationalist flames, and pit the people whom they hoped to merge together against one another! Wow, this all sounds so familiar!

...I first began to be curious about the other side of the story of World War II and so I timidly began reading a certain banned book written by an Austrian painter and published in Germany in 1925.
When this Austrian artist described the “Slavicization” of Austria to the detriment of the ethnic German culture at the time… having read about the Magyarization of the Zipsers, my heart started beating very fast for I knew that what he was describing was true.
And I knew that this information regarding widespread attacks on German cultural identity beginning nearly one hundred years prior to World War II was being completely disregarded in the mainstream historical narrative, but that it was obviously key and pertinent to understanding the hows and the whys of what the Germans were really thinking in the 1930s.
But, what I hadn’t fully understood until my visit to the Mucha Museum was how strongly the Czechs felt the same way.
