Israel says it launched retaliatory attacks in Iran

The Israel Defense Forces said it conducted "precise" strikes on military targets in Iran.

The strikes, it said, were in response to months of attacks from Iran against Israel. Officials have been awaiting Israel's response to a barrage of missiles that were fired from Iran at Israel on Oct. 1.

"The regime in Iran and its proxies in the region have been relentlessly attacking Israel since October 7th — on seven fronts — including direct attacks from Iranian soil," the IDF said in a statement. "Like every other sovereign country in the world, the State of Israel has the right and the duty to respond."

Iranian state media reported explosions inside the country’s capital of Tehran. Two soldiers were killed by Israel's air strikes on Iran this morning, according to a statement from the Iranian army.
‘I'm walking here!': Jaywalking legalized in New York City

Jaywalking - that time-honored practice of crossing the street outside of the crosswalk or against the traffic light -- is now legal in New York City.

Legislation passed by the City Council last month officially became law over the weekend after Mayor Eric Adams declined to take action -- either by signing or vetoing it -- after 30 days.

Council Member Mercedes Narcisse, a Brooklyn Democrat who sponsored the legislation, said Tuesday that the new law ends racial disparities in enforcement, noting that more than 90% of the jaywalking tickets issued last year went to Black and Latino people.

“Let’s be real, every New Yorker jaywalks. People are simply trying to get where they need to go,” she said in an emailed statement. “Laws that penalize common behaviors for everyday movement shouldn’t exist, especially when they unfairly impact communities of color.”

The new law permits pedestrians to cross a roadway at any point, including outside of a crosswalk. It also allows for crossing against traffic signals and specifically states that doing so is no longer a violation of the city’s administrative code.

PATH Hoboken station closing for 25 days for renovation work: Here's what you need to know

The Hoboken PATH station will close for 25 days early next year for track and station work, requiring commuters to make alternative plans for travel into New York City, the Port Authority announced Thursday.

The full-station closure is set to begin at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30 until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25

The Port Authority said the closure is necessary to do work on the two tunnels into the station and is better than the alternative option of weekend service reductions for a full year. The Port Authority also plans to make improvements to the station and upgrades to the tracks in the station.
NYC Marathon 2024: Road closures, route map and more to know

Tens of thousands of marathon runners will be back on the streets of New York City this weekend, marking the return of what's considered to be the world's largest 26.2-mile race.

The 2024 TCS New York City Marathon kicks off Sunday morning at 8 a.m., with an estimated 50,000 people expected to take off from Staten Island and navigate the marathon course through all five of the city's boroughs. (That morning also marks the end of daylight saving time).

The race starts at the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and finishes at Central Park West Drive and 67th Street. Significant street closures, some rolling and some otherwise, will be in effect. See the full list of closures and the course map below.

Last year, a total of 51,453 people completed the marathon. The New York Road Runners said the average race time came in at 4 hours, 39 minutes and 47 seconds.
Kamala Harris appears in ‘SNL' cold open alongside Maya Rudolph

The Democratic nominee for president made a last-minute appearance in the cold open on "Saturday Night Live," appearing with Maya Rudolph, who has impersonated Harris on the show throughout the election season.

The cold open began with James Austin Johnson doing his impersonation of former President Donald Trump, who was dressed as a garbage man, alluding to something the former president really did earlier in the week.

The sketch then cuts to Rudolph as Harris, along with Jim Gaffigan as Harris' running mate and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Andy Samberg as Doug Emhoff.

The two eventually leave Rudolph as Harris alone to practice her speech.

"Gosh, I wish I could talk to someone who has a been in my shoes," Rudolph as Harris said. "A Black, south Asian woman, preferably from the Bay Area."
Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands and Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya win NYC Marathon

Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands won the men's race at the New York City Marathon on Sunday and Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya took the women's event.

Both runners pulled away from their closest competitors in the final few hundred meters to come away with their first victories in the race.

Nageeye was step-for-step with 2022 champion Evans Chebet before using a burst heading into Central Park to come away with the win in 2 hours, 7 minutes, 39 seconds. Chebet finished 6 seconds behind.

“At the finish I was like, am I’m dreaming? I won New York,” Nageeye said.

He had run the New York race three times before with his best finish coming in 2022, when he was third.

“I know the course,” Nageeye said. “Today was two things: survive that race and my race is after 36 (kilometers; 22 miles). I was thinking like a cyclist, survive 36K and you’re going to win.”

Chepkirui was running New York for the first time and pulled away from defending champion Hellen Obiri in the women's race. Chepkirui, who started to run marathons in 2022, won in 2:24.35. Obiri finished nearly 15 seconds behind.

Biden urges Americans to trust integrity of electoral system: ‘It's honest, fair and transparent'

Speaking from the Rose Garden, Biden said the American people deserve a “peaceful and orderly” transfer of power, adding that "in a democracy, the will of the people always prevails.”

Biden said he hoped Trump's victory would reassure the American people that the election system was fair and safe, a subtle nod to Trump's refusal to accept his own election loss in 2020.

"I also hope we can lay to rest the question about the integrity of the American electoral system. It is honest, it is fair, and it is transparent, and it can be trusted, win or lose," Biden said.
NYC air quality unhealthy as smoke blankets tri-state; mayor bans park grilling

Wildfires continue to burn around the tri-state as red flag warnings remain and drought conditions persist. The fires are leading to smoky skies and diminished air quality.

Nearly a half-dozen wildfires are burning in New Jersey and red flag warnings cover the tri-state area, from the Garden State to New York City to Fairfield County, Connecticut, Saturday, two days after the U.S. Drought Monitor released ever-worsening news. The tri-state area is withering in a prolonged and increasingly extreme drought situation.

The worsening smoke conditions triggered an air quality health advisory for New York City, as well as Rockland and Westchester counties. By Saturday evening, the air quality had spiked to "very unhealthy" levels.

Anyone with heart or lung disease, older adults and young children are advised to avoid outdoor exposure. Everyone else is encouraged to limit outdoor activities or keep them short.

President-elect Donald Trump on Monday named former Rep. Lee Zeldin to lead the Environmental Protection Agency as he continues to build out his future administration with loyal supporters.

New photos released showing full face of suspected United Healthcare CEO shooter without a mask

The NYPD has released new photos showing the full face of the suspect in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

This is the first time the public has seen photos of the suspect without a face mask since the shooting that killed Thompson, 50, outside a midtown Manhattan hotel.

It's not clear where the photos were taken or the timing of the photos in relation to the shooting.

"This does not appear to be a random act of violence; all indications are that it was a premediated, targeted attack. The full investigative efforts of the NYPD are continuing, and we are asking for the public’s help," the NYPD said in a post on social media.

A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
Luigi Mangione rants outside court, fights extradition to NYC in alleged CEO murder

Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old Ivy League graduate from a Maryland real estate family charged with murder in UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's death, has not waived extradition to New York City following a hearing in Pennsylvania Tuesday afternoon where the judge also denied bail.

Although Mangione is contesting the request for extradition to where the crime occurred, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg will seek the governor’s warrant to secure his transfer to the city, according to the DA's office. Lawyer Thomas Dickey confirmed to NBC News outside of court that he represents Mangione in the case.

Earlier, Mangione arrived outside Blair County Court and shouted, "it's an insult to the intelligence of the American people." It wasn't clear what he was referring to.

The developments come as investigators comb through the background and lifestyle of Mangione in an effort to piece together the alleged crime. They say he left writings that say in part, "frankly these parasites had it coming," referencing the healthcare industry, a senior law enforcement official briefed on the case confirmed to NBC News.
Trump says he will ‘look at' pardon for Mayor Eric Adams, who is facing bribery charges

President-elect Donald Trump on Monday said in a far-ranging news conference that he would consider pardoning embattled New York Mayor Eric Adams.

“Yeah I would,” consider pardoning Adams, Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, before saying that he was not familiar with the specifics of the charges Adam is facing.

Adams has pleaded not guilty to charges that he accepted lavish travel benefits and illegal campaign contributions from a Turkish official and other foreign nationals in exchange for political favors that included pushing through the opening of a Turkish consulate building.

He has vowed to continue serving as mayor while fighting the charges “with every ounce of my strength and my spirit.” Adams has suggested — without providing evidence — that the charges are politically motivated.

No E-ZPass? Congestion pricing could cost you 50% more to drive into Manhattan

While the revised congestion pricing plan reduces the toll from $15 to $9, drivers who don’t use E-ZPass tags to pay for their toll could find themselves paying higher rates to drive into the Congestion Relief Zone.
According to the MTA, customers who enter the Congestion Relief Zone will pay 50% than drivers with an E-ZPass tag.
Congestion pricing in New York City began Jan. 5, 2025 after the MTA and Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a cheaper version of the first-in-the-nation congestion toll.
Jets agree to terms with Broncos executive Darren Mougey to be their GM

The New York Jets have agreed to terms with Denver Broncos assistant general manager Darren Mougey to be their GM, a person familiar with the hiring told The Associated Press.

The 39-year-old Mougey has worked as Broncos general manager George Paton's top assistant for the past three seasons. Mougey, who replaces the fired Joe Douglas in New York, will join new Jets coach Aaron Glenn in trying to turn the franchise around.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Saturday because the team didn't immediately announce the agreement. NFL reporter Josina Anderson first reported Friday night that the sides had an agreement in place.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's fiery and confrontational White House visit on Friday was the subject of the cold open for the latest episode of "Saturday Night Live," and the sketch even featured show alum and "Austin Powers" star Mike Myers as billionaire Elon Musk.

With cast member Mikey Day as Zelenskyy, James Austin Johnson as Trump, Bowen Yang as Vance and Marcello Hernandez as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the sketch poked fun at the real-life Trump and Zelenskyy arguing in the Oval Office about whether the war, which began three years ago when Russia invaded Ukraine, was like a card game.
