Prof Joanne Roberts, Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs at Yale-NUS College, will be Yale-NUS President from 1 July 2022.

She will succeed outgoing President Prof Tan Tai Yong, who will be completing his full five-year term in June next year.

An esteemed economist who believes deeply in the liberal arts model of education, Prof Roberts shared that she is honoured to be leading the community at Yale-NUS.

Two third-year students from the NUS School of Design and Environment, Ho Yi Jing and David Ng, have clinched the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2021 at the prestigious international competition. 🏆

Yi Jing’s design, the S+ Watercooler, provides a hygienic, contactless watercooler experience, while David’s invention, the Eclipur, enhances sleep by engaging hearing, breathing and sight to ease anxiety and calm the mind.

NUS Vice President (Research and Technology) Prof Liu Bin has bagged the prestigious Kabiller Young Investigator’s Award in Nanoscience and Nanomedicine.

She was recognised for her work in the development of nanoparticle probes for enhancing biomedical imaging capabilities and tracking disease, with applications in monitoring cancer metastasis and tissue regeneration, among others.

NUS Business School students have excelled once again on the world stage, with the recently-held 2021 Asia Investment & Banking Conference-HSBC (AIBC-HSBC) competitions.

An undergraduate team clinched the top prize in the AIBC-HSBC Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Case Competition, while second-year finance student Zhao Danfeng emerged as the global champion in the individual trading category of the AIBC-HSBC Sales and Trading Competition.

Held on Wednesday and yesterday, the two ceremonies of the NUS Alumni Awards 2021 honoured the achievements of 40 trailblazers – the largest cohort since the awards were introduced in 2005.

The Eminent Alumni Award went to Ambassador-at-Large Professor Chan Heng Chee, first-generation leader Mr Ong Pang Boon, and former top civil servant Mr Philip Yeo.

Passionate about the environment from a young age, third-year NUS Arts and Social Sciences and NUS Environmental Studies student Cassandra Yip is rolling out ground-up initiatives to address the problems plaguing our planet today. 🌏

She has founded Earth School Singapore — the country's first non-profit school for environmental education — and co-founded the NUS Chapter of Student Energy, a global network of youth organisations advocating for sustainable energy.

NUS has been named one of most innovative organisations in South and Southeast Asia by research firm Clarivate for the second year running.

The ranking weighed factors such as the number of patents, number of citations, patent success rate and the institution’s level of globalisation.

Most would think that responses to Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution can be simplified as a conflict between science and religion. Dr John van Wyhe from NUS Biological Sciences sought to give a more comprehensive picture by launching a collection of 1,700 book reviews on Darwin’s work online.

A culmination of 16 years of research, the collection will make possible more scholarly studies that exceed the usual reaction to Darwin.

Composer and researcher Dr Peter Tornquist has been appointed the new Dean of the NUS Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.

An influential voice in higher music education, Dr Tornquist served as the Principal of the Norwegian Academy of Music where he helped position the Academy as one of the highest ranked institutions in the performing arts globally.

Dr Tornquist will begin his term of office in February 2022.
