Want to learn about Quantum Theory and its applications in computing? Join us next week!

In this talk, Clive & Lin will briefly run through some crucial findings that called for a new physics. Focusing on its broad mathematical formalism, alongside illustrations, they will explore what exactly characterizes quantum theory, how it explains these discoveries and the bizarre questions it brings to the fore.

In the second half of the talk, Technical details about quantum theory will covered, which will give you a taste of two specific quantum protocolsβ€”an inefficient way of factoring numbers (with hints at a possible speedup), and a secure way of distributing shared private keys. Finally, they will briefly cover other technologies enabled by our understanding of quantum theory, with the reminder that quantum technology is present all around us.

Clive Cenxin Aw and Zaw Lin Htoo are PhD students from a theoretical group at the Centre of Quantum Technologies. Clive's research interests lie in comparing the reversal of classical processes and that of quantum processes, especially in connection to what might be said about entanglement, memory and thermodynamics in the quantum regime. Lin works primarily on methods to certify that β€œsomething quantum” is really happening in simple systems, like pendulums and spinning tops, with a secondary interest in theoretical and numerical studies of quantum devices.

Hey everyone! NUS Hackers Advent of Code (AoC) Challenge is back again this year πŸŽ‰

Advent of Code 2023 is starting in 2 days time (1st Dec, 1pm SGT) and we are back again this year to support you with some goodies and a community to solve problems together with you!

Feel free to join us and find more details through our NUS Hackers Discord, where you can get started by looking at our #what-is-aoc channel. You are more than welcome to invite any of your friends who might be interested! This group is strictly non-competitive, we are focused on learning and exploring cool solutions πŸ˜„

What is Advent of Code? πŸ€”πŸŽ…

tl;dr: 25 days of fun programming problems of increasing difficulty, one a day until Christmas. It is a great way for beginners to pick up programming and computational thinking, as well as more experienced people to learn a new programming language or just solve problems for fun! Read more on our NUS Hackers Discord.

Goodies ☺️🎁

To encourage everyone to take part in this challenge, we'll be giving out some goodies 🎁 to 15 lucky individuals (randomly drawn) at the end of the challenge!!
