Friday Hacks #158: Homo ex Machina and Project Intern
Tomorrow’s Friday Hacks is a big one.
Homo ex Machina: In Singapore for a few days: join Sergei Markoff, the creator of the SmarThink chess engine, for his talk on neural interfaces, neural models & possibilities of uploading consciousness on a flash drive in our time. We’ll cover the brief history of neuromorphic machines, learn of the existing invasive and non-invasive interfaces, brainstorm around neuroplasticity and dive into the recent progress in bionic prosthetics & creating animal-cyborgs.
Project Intern: You’ve probably read about tech internships and all their various perks. Heck, you’ve probably even seen a movie about it. Now’s the time to live it. Our coreteam members Li Kai and Varun will address all the questions you’ve ever had about internships and help you on your way to getting one. Afterwards, ask questions of other students who have interned locally and overseas at various companies. These companies include Google, Facebook, Twitter, Asana, Apple, Affirm, Jump Trading, and Jane Street as well as local companies like Carousell, Garena and Grab!
As always, pizza starts at 6.30pm 🍕
This week’s Friday Hacks will be held at the i3-Auditorium. For more details, check out https://www.facebook.com/events/542339376174590/. Please RSVP so that we can order enough food for everyone. See you there!

Friday Hacks #159: PayPal on The Reactive Mindset, and Carousell on automation to increase efficiency
This week, PayPal and Carousell will be coming down to talk about reacting to change and automation, topics which are relevant to any software engineer’s life.
PayPal's talk will focus on the reactive manifesto and various technologies available which provide a reactive approach to programming. Above all, it focuses on the change in mindset required to adopt the reactive way of doing things.
Carousell will be sharing how they make use of a tool for data visualization and reporting to automate dashboard building in an Experimentation Reporting Framework. Such frameworks are used by Carousell’s product teams, who carry out A/B experiments and decide if a feature/change has positive impact to the marketplace.
All are welcome to attend. As always, pizza starts at 6.30pm 🙂 Special thanks to PayPal, who’s sponsoring the pizzas this week!

Hi there folks!
We hope you've enjoyed our Hackerschool workshops so far. Moving forward, we will increase the intensity of our workshops, and to give a better learning experience to participants, we will restrict our classes to at most 20 committed participants.
The React and Redux workshop, held on Saturday, 6 October 2018, will be the last workshop of the semester that is open to public. The remaining workshops will be by selection only.
Our plan is to delve into supplementary topics, culminating with a chance to understand and contribute to the codebase of NUSMods, one of the most popular web applications used in NUS. Participants will also get a chance to work more closely with experienced mentors to write production-quality code, and general software engineering principles such as development lifecycles.
With this application form, you are also required to submit a simple assignment to make sure that you have understood the basics correctly. The assignment requires you to create a simple to-do list app; more information can be found in https://bit.ly/hs2018assignment. If you have any questions regarding the assignment, or if you need any hints/pointers, you can always email us at coreteam@nushackers.org.
This application form will close at Wednesday, 17 October 2018 23:59.
