NUS guide: surviving university! π«ππ―
Tutorial registration results are already mostly visible at this time, ahead of the official release! As sort of a loophole, you can unofficially view these at: Edurec CourseReg > Drop Classes You will see a list of classes, including both lectures and tutorialsβ¦
Just a note that the βdrop classesβ page stopped being visible earlier today; this does tend to happen the day before the official release. (Being able to view a sneak peek of tutorial slots under the βdrop classesβ tab has always been an unofficial loophole).
Edit: You should now be able to view these instead under βView Classesβ!
For those still hopeful for further allocations, all the best for the official release at 9 a.m.!
π¨ Round 2 tutorial registration also starts at 9 a.m.

What if I didnβt get a spot in round 1?
[TODAY, TILL 5 p.m.] Tutorial Registration Round 2: if you didnβt get a spot, bid in excess and be mindful of vacancies left for the courses you bid for. Securing something is better than nothing β at least you have something to offer for potential swaps later on.
If you did secure a tutorial slot in Round 1 (but not a desirable one), our understanding is that the only way to switch in Round 2 is to drop the current slot to bid for another; however, this is extremely risky and not recommended, as you may end up with neither. The opportunity to add/swap is on 17 August, and that is generally a safer time to do so.
[17 August 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.] Add/Swap Period: Remaining vacancies after Round 2 are up for grabs first come first serve on 18 Aug. Join the group chats listed in our pinned message too β these may be helpful for swapping requesting to swap tutorial slots!
[17 August after 5 p.m.] Appeal to Course Host Faculty opens, with limited reasons accepted for why they should offer you a spot.
If you found these useful, do share our channel @NUSguide with your friends/juniors β we share uni tips/hacks throughout the year! ππ»

Bots for matching - study buddies, lunch buddies, new friends, 1-for-1 deals, going to events and more:
If youβre feeling bored or want to meet more peers, you may check out these telegram bots for matching anonymously with other users! These were first started way back in 2021 across different universities during the Covid-19 pandemic and was viral on TikTok for a time ( https://www.tiktok.com/@nicolettecalliewe/video/6973191836521237762 , https://www.tiktok.com/@ninjabread_/video/6971050102278360321 ), gaining over 50k users!
These bots match you for an anonymous chat through the bot (which acts as a middleman), and you can choose to share your @ only when you are comfortable!
Note: This project originally received NUSSU Council Funding in 2022. NUSSU is not involved in nor responsible for any of the projectβs operations.
The bot continues to operate today, and is student-run!
@nusmatchbot : opt to match only with verified NUS students, match by faculty/batch/major, and goals β such as grabbing lunch or getting 1-for-1 deals together! This may be used for making friends or getting helpful senior advice too. π
@nuschatbot : older version; quick match but lack of student email verification means higher risk of spammers/scammers β use with caution!
β-
@cupidsgbot : this bot is geared more towards dating, and you can match by MBTI and specific dating goals! π
@simplymeetbot : match by location; chats reset at 10 am daily, and you can opt to meet with verified students who are already near you (e.g. also on campus). This is meant for meet-ups for lunch/dinner/activities etc. (you can set various goals) on the day itself. This is meant for wholesome meet-ups, and there isnβt gender selection by default. π€
Nonetheless, stay safe and limit the personal info you share when chatting!

Tutorial Registration Round 2 results officially release at 9 a.m. (but as usual, you may be able to sneak peek beforehand).
π¨What is important is that the add/swap tutorial option also opens at 9 a.m. The add/swap is first come first serve (this is unlike all the previous rounds!) Thus, youβd want to be awake at 9 a.m. to have your first pick at any remaining vacancies (if you need them). Requests to add/swap are processed at regular intervals: youβll be shown the number of βmatching requestsβ when you try to swap.
Typically, swapping with friends would mean to coordinate to submit, at the same time, aligned swap requests and hope the system swaps both of you successfully. The course/faculty groups we shared earlier on our channel are helpful for this and you can start searching ahead of time for one-one swaps since the swap period is short, ending at 5 p.m.

βWβ grade period ends 27 September
If you drop a course by 27 September, it wonβt count towards your GPA and a βWβ grade is shown instead. If you do drop a course after 27 September, it will be an βFβ grade (a fail grade does drastically affect your GPA). Thus, you have slightly less than a month more to consider whether a course is really not for you.
Some may think of a βWβ grade as a blemish on the transcript, though one could think that a reasonable employer/assessor would not care about a 'W' grade. This doesnβt affect your GPA, and to most, genuinely doesnβt mean anything, especially as most would look at GPA/Honours class before anything else.

NUSSU Free Bubble Tea, Ice Cream, Nachos & Churros Today
If you are in campus, there are freebies up for grabs from NUSSU Welfare later at UTown! Long queues are probably expected, though.
It is not unusual that some (who want to be at the front of the queue) would already be on standby to form a queue before the distribution timing.
If youβre a freshman, you are also eligible to get a free freshman shirt on top of this!

P.S. besides the free bbt/food today (for all), there is also a free shirt if you are a freshie! (above post has been edited to note this)
Also, since you're on campus for these, if youβre looking for a lunch buddy or someone to get these freebies with, you can try out:
β’ @SimplyMeetBot (if you are on campus, select the smallest distances! This bot matches you with someone else who is also nearby/on campus)
β’ @nusmatchbot (you can opt to match only with verified NUS students)
The bots allow you to match/chat anonymously, with the bot as a middleman to host the chat, but you can choose to exchange contacts. Stay safe and be wary, though!

Tips/Reminders - Recess Week
β’ βWβ grade ends 27 September 23:59 p.m. β if you want to drop a course without affecting your GPA, you must do so by 27 Sep (all that shows will be a βWβ grade on your transcript). Dropping a course after would typically mean an F grade (fail)
β’ If you previously wanted to stay on campus but couldnβt, you can try writing in to various halls or residences. While chances are slim, spots often open because students are allowed to withdraw within the first four weeks of the semester without needing to pay full fees. Most residences typically offer these freed up places to internal connections or waitlisted applications, but if they have not done so (which we have reason to think is the case for a few residences), this likely means a few places still available.

STI-Summary-of-Policy-Cover (NUS).pdf

@NUSguide Tips: Travel Insurance
If youβre on or going for exchange, NUS already provides travel insurance for you through Chubb. Its policy is attached here. It appears quite comprehensive, and there generally seems to be not much problems with making claims. Those who are cash-strapped may thus consider whether it is necessary to get your own separate insurance or if this already suffices.
What about personal trips before/after/during SEP?
What many do not know is that our travel insurance already covers "personal vacation taken by NUS students before and/or immediately after a Study Trip and within the geographical area of coverage, up to a max. of 60 cumulative days; personal deviation taken during the official student trip is automatically covered and shall not form part of the 60 days cumulative days as allowed for personal vacation."
It is fairly common that students may want to further travel for leisure before, after, or even during the SEP; the travel insurance NUS provides us appears to cover these too, not just official SEP activity, though you should read for any other T&C.
Anecdotally, students have been able to claim even for personal trips outside of the SEP country. This does give us the impression that 'within the geographical area of coverage' is not limited to just your country of exchange (note: the NUS STI Summary writes the "Geographical Scope of Cover" as "Worldwide", so that might be what is referred to).

Also, this is back for those who are keen!
For those unaware, NUS already offers ChatGPT Edu access for free β this may suffice for many of you.
Some benefits remain, though: 1) a second number is useful for those who want to separate work/personal life communications, 2) a second number could allow you to get new accounts on various platforms/free trials that offer benefits beyond the subscription cost, 3) you may benefit from premium access to Claude, if you find its responses superior to ChatGPT, 4) the Starbucks gift card if youβre among the first 20
