What if you did not get the course you want, or change your mind later?

(For freshmen, the appeal deadline appears to be over, so consider the following!)

For freshmen and existing seniors:
A) Continue with the course you were given, and apply to transfer courses.
It is possible to change courses. As a transfer applicant, while your pre-university score (e.g. A-Level) is likely still considered to some extent, doing well in Year 1 in university may also be helpful in proving academic merit to transfer to a course you could not enter. Depending on which faculty you transfer to and what courses you take in Year 1, you may be able to count credits towards your new course of study should you successfully transfer, such that there is less or no delay in graduation. This may work well for faculties that provide more leeway for unrestricted electives, or if the faculty you transfer to shares similar courses with your Y1 faculty.

Note that there will be an increase in university fees payable should you have to extend candidature past the normal number of semesters as there would not be further MOE Tuition Grant. However, NUS subsidises the first and second semester past normal candidature such that the increase in fees is significantly mitigated.

The first window to apply to transfer is usually in February.

NUS Law, for instance, allows a transfer of 40 units from your previous course if you successfully transfer to law school (this means no delay in graduation if you transfer in after Y1, or only a one year delay if you transfer in after Y2). This is rare, with typically only 1-2 people per batch succeeding. From my observation, there has been a recent increase in the latest batch, with ~6 successful law transferees.
————————————
B) If you are not yet entering university this AY, you may consider retaking pre-university exams in NS/through a gap year, such as the A-Levels to either attain a better score or retake specific subjects to fulfill prerequisites.

C) It is said that NUSC students get a special benefit of being able to transfer to any course they want within NUSC, with a supposedly 100% success rate; this excludes restricted programs (Refer to Page 4 here): “NUSC students have the option to switch into another major (not including Law, PPE, and Pharm Science) without further application, that is, they won't be scrutinized, approved, or rejected for reasons of fit.”

D) Post-graduate options: Duke-NUS offers Medicine at a post-graduate level for those who have completed a bachelors degree in a different field. Similarly, NUS and SMU Law offer a "Juris Doctor"—where you can take Law for three years after completing a bachelors in something else first. However, this does mean that you will have many additional years of schooling, and these options can be very costly. It remains an option for those who still want to go into Law/Medicine after completing an undergraduate degree in something else, though!

For seniors: the updated transcript has been released (and can be found on edurec!)

You can check whether you're on the Dean's List by viewing your transcript; a line would be written indicating this below last sem's results, if you are on it.

------------
"I have a 'Hold' on my record due to e.g. prior library fines and haven't been able to view my grades till now, because I am blocked! How can I view them?"

For ethical reasons, we are advising the following on the assumption that you have e.g. paid the library fines, but due to technical reasons, there can be a delay in when your 'Hold' gets lifted (even after you have paid up).

Although you are not able to view the transcript nor check your grades on univus, a "loophole" is that your grades are still shown on your graduation audit report. Steps: Edurec > Academics > Degree Progress > Graduation Audit Report.

For freshmen:

Note that the last hall rag sign-ups close tonight! Although no hall guarantees that joining rag will mean a spot in the hall, it is a popular view that joining rag might give you some edge (whether because you may get to know hall seniors who back up your application, or just because it may show that you’re truly passionate about being in hall). That said, plenty of people get into halls without joining rag, so it’s not a must—but if you’re looking for a way to spend your time this summer and make more friends (who may also be potential hall mates) ahead of time, this is certainly an option!

Even if you’re not looking to perform 💃🕺, there are typically other subcomms in rag to join, such as being involved in making the set-ups (known as “floats”) or costumes, which are known to be rather elaborate!

The rag sign-ups for the other halls have closed. The following is compiled by @NUSSUfop ! Do subscribe to them too to view more camp / other orientation project deadlines:

For incoming freshmen applying for halls/houses, note that submissions close at 11.59 a.m. (17 June)—in the morning, not before midnight.

(This timing change applies to all housing-related application deadlines, for seniors who may be applying in future too. It used to be at 11.59 p.m., but was changed this year to 11.59 a.m.)

For freshies: Residences, Houses, or Halls?

For the still undecided:

One view, if you’re truly undecided, is to apply for halls because you could always apply for residences/houses as a senior after your first year in hall (if you do not hit enough points to stay another year in hall). The reverse (i.e. applying to a hall after having stayed in a residence/houses) is said to be much harder because most spots would already be given to those who stayed in the hall previously (through the hall point system, and likely most of the “Master’s List”).

Obviously, if there are strong cultural preferences, then your decision between the three should be clearer. (For instance, if you purely want a place to stay but no interaction, some might point you towards the residences). However, if you’re unsure what sort of culture you’re looking for, you may also consider a middleground: e.g. although halls may have generally more activities/commitments than the other options, you could always pick halls with lower commitment.

For instance, while some halls do not set a cap on the number of CCAs they look at in calculating hall points (which may end up with many people taking 7-8 CCAs or even more), some halls such as King Edward VII Hall and Raffles Hall have a policy of looking at only e.g. your top 4 best CCAs—this makes it easier opt to take up fewer CCAs, and yet continue hall stay.

In any case, you could always go to a hall and decide not to take up too many commitments (although this may mean you won’t get another year of stay)! 👻

Other considerations may include whether you’d want a meal plan (or not), the general environment, and proximity to your faculty.

For those looking to buy NUS shirts, those from this official fundraiser below are the cheapest you can get them (at as low as $13 per shirt). The main alternative is to buy from NUS Co-op, but their prices are usually seen as over-priced (so an NUS shirt there costs ~$26 per shirt, which is double that of this official fundraiser) so it's recommended that you get your shirts from the @nusshirts fundraiser! The fundraiser only runs for a limited duration, so this is the best time to get your merch!

What if I didn’t secure housing in Round 1?

Whether you’re in Round 1 or Round 2 matters. You might recall our previous post reminding that Round 1 ended at 11.59 a.m. (back on 17 June). This means that if you submitted at noon at or later that day, you’re in Round 2, and it’s normal that you haven’t heard back (because what just got released are Round 1 results).

That said, hostels generally fill up most spots in Round 1. Some may intentionally reserve some spots for Round 2 applicants, but these would be limited. Spots in Round 2 could also be available if those offered in Round 1 decided not to proceed. You may continue to make an appeal for stay if you applied but didn’t secure stay in Round 1.

What if I am still unsuccessful?

There is a lesser-known continuation: your appeal doesn’t end here. In the first weeks of school starting, people do withdraw. There has historically always been students (even if very few) withdrawing from their hostel stay in the first weeks of school because the dorm-life is not what they expected, or for other personal reasons.

Noting that this is beyond the typical application period via UHMS, the way to get these newly vacated spots has been to email specific hostels to appeal for stay in the first few weeks after the semester starts in August. Some (both seniors and freshmen) have indeed managed to secure their stay this way. It likely helps if you have compelling reasons or ways you can contribute to the hostel.

CourseReg calendar: https://www.nus.edu.sg/CourseReg/docs/UGCPE_CourseRegSchedule.pdf

Reminder that Academic Plan Declaration starts on 14 July 9 a.m.
(it may be a good idea to declare by 19 July so that the system has processed this by Round 1 CourseReg on 21 July. This processing takes around 24 hours, so you may be too late if you only do it when CourseReg opens.)

Here’s a tip applicable to some:
- When “bidding” for courses later on, priority is given based on various factors, such as seniority. One factor that gives you priority over someone else for course selection is actually what your declared major/minor is, and whether that course is tied to it.

Since academic declaration resets every semester, some students take advantage of this
. Some see this as a loop-hole (i.e. declaring something as your intended second major just so you have priority for its modules—even if in truth, one hasn't decided to take that as a second major/minor)

E.g. if you are from NUS CHS, and are planning to major in e.g. Sociology (or you're in some other faculty), but just want to take an economics course as a UE/for exploration, you would probably “lose” to students when trying to bid for that economics introductory course when you are competing against those who have declared themselves to be Economics majors or even those who declared they’d second major/minor in economics. In this case, some might take advantage of the Academic Plan Declaration by declaring “Economics” as one’s second major/minor to ensure they can get the introductory economics course, even though the truth is they just want to take the economics introductory course for exploration/as a UE. This may give you priority over students (of same seniority etc.) that did not declare "Economics" in their plan at all.
—> in fact, supposing that it is extremely easy to get the modules for Sociology (in the above example, where it’s one’s actual intended first major) compared to Economics (just an example), what has been strategic to some is to just declare their first major as “Economics” (the major with courses harder to successfully bid for) and the second major as “Sociology” (the one that e.g. is easier to bid for). This helps them to more likely secure the hard-to-get course whilst still getting the easy-to-get course.
--> another reason to declare is because if it's not in your plan at all, then you may not be able to partake in bidding in Round 1 of CourseReg (and of course, there'd be fewer spots by Round 2/3).

The above is just a guide for those who are still unsure about what they want to do—let the above be assurance that it’s entirely fine to declare something and then change your declaration in another semester! I.e. if there’s a course hard to bid for that you wanted to take just to try out before deciding if you want to second major in it, you’re probably wiser to just declare that you are first—you can always change your mind later when it’s acad plan declaration in the subsequent sem!
