The Universityโ€™s recent interdisciplinary initiatives โ€“ establishment of the College of Humanities and Sciences, and the new Common Curriculum for the Faculty of Engineering and the School of Design and Environment โ€“ as well as efforts it has made to future-proof education by preparing students for lifelong learning, are resonating with the latest batch of students. During the 2021 admissions exercise, 71% of those who had applied to these programmes as the first choice accepted the offer. Of the incoming cohort, more than 4,000 will be exposed to interdisciplinary, and the University hopes to up that number beyond 6,000 next year.

Professor Brenda Yeoh Elected to the Fellowship of the British Academy

Prof Yeoh from the Department of Geography and former Dean of NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (January 2010- January 2017) joins a list of 84 new Fellows who have been elected into The British Academy, the United Kingdomโ€™s national academy for the humanities and social sciences. She is the only Singaporean scholar to be elected into the Academy this year.

The University has announced the appointment of Professor Lionel Wee as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Co-Dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences from 1 October 2021.

Prof Wee takes over from Prof Robbie Goh, who shall be assuming the role of Provost at the Singapore University of Social Sciences.

Book on Kampong Glam Wins Singapore History Prize
Ms Hidayah Aminโ€™s (Political Science & European Studies โ€˜01) book, Leluhur: Singaporeโ€™s Kampong Gelam, winner of the 2021 NUS Singapore History Prize, delves into the history of one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas of Singapore and its growth into a cosmopolitan urban centre.

Chair Kishore Mahbubani mooted the Prize in a 2014 column for The Straits Times, awarding it to a publication that makes a lasting impact on the understanding of Singapore's history.

Asst Prof Jack Meng-Tat Chia (History) Wins EuroSEAS Humanities Book Prize 2021
Asst Prof Chiaโ€™s โ€œMonks in Motion, Buddhism and Modernity Across the South China Seaโ€ provides readers insights on the connected history of Buddhist communities in China and Southeast Asia, and is based on his multilingual research in Asia.

The Prize is awarded to the best academic book on Southeast Asia published in the humanities, including archaeology, art history, history and more.
