1. Tails of truth: How effective are fables with human-like animals in teaching children honesty?
Classic fables like Goldilocks and the Three Bears that feature anthropomorphised animals, or animals with human traits, have entertained children for centuries while aiming to teach moral values. But just how effective are these stories in instilling virtues? Research by NUS psychologist Associate Professor Ding Xiao Pan (NUS Psychology) and some of her students answer this question. https://tinyurl.com/p2tafm47

2. NEW BOOK | ‘Ancient India: Living Traditions’
Dr Sureshkumar Muthukumaran (NUS History) and co-author Dr Sushma Jansari (Tabor Foundation Curator of South Asia Collections, The British Museum) explore the religious traditions of Jainism, Buddhism and Hinduism through the ages and their spread beyond India. https://tinyurl.com/mvzt6thr

3. Has China’s great relocation helped Southeast Asia industrialise?

4. Seniors are taking the kampung spirit beyond the neighbourhood

1. Singapore Filmmakers Adapt as U.S. Tariff Threat Looms
Amid uncertainty over Trump’s proposed 100% tariffs on foreign films, Singaporean producers are strengthening global partnerships. 2. Alamak! Good Communication Needs Adaptability, Not Just Grammar
Singlish words like alamak entering the Oxford English Dictionary and Singapore Civil Defence Force’s artificial intelligence (AI) model in development using Singlish highlight the need for adaptable communication. Sticking only to formal English feels robotic; effective interaction requires adjusting tone, style and even emojis. And drama in education can build confidence and empathy, making communication more strategic and engaging. 1. Uncovering hidden stories of the pre-war Japanese community in Singapore
In an attempt to reconstruct the pre-war Japanese community in Singapore’s “Little Japan” around Middle Road, Dr Clay Eaton (NUS Japanese Studies and NUS Asia Research Institute, ARI), Professor Naoko Shimazu (ARI) and Dr Chee Keng Lee (NUS College) teamed up for a project known as ‘Mapping Middle Road’, the first public history project of its kind about the Japanese community in Singapore. https://tinyurl.com/msxj5t2t

2. Why are the videos you see becoming more extreme?

1. Beyond the grades: What success means to a new generation
At the recent Insights Singapore Forum by the Political Science Society of NUS, an invited panel joined students and youths to explore the issues around success, meritocracy, elitism and the need for society to shift the focus beyond individual success toward a more inclusive and multi-dimensional understanding of success. https://tinyurl.com/53mfty4v

2. Associate Professor Taberez Ahmed Neyazi awarded prestigious fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton
The IAS has been home to many of the world’s most influential thinkers, including Albert Einstein and J. Robert Oppenheimer. While there, Assoc Prof Neyazi (NUS Communications and New Media) will be researching the politics of internet shutdowns, specifically the relationship between technology, governance and power. https://tinyurl.com/yey33x2e

3. How NUS start-ups are driving sustainable change through green innovation
In the fight against climate change, a new generation of NUS student entrepreneurs is storming the sustainability frontier. Meet year 3 undergraduate Chew Chi Ying (NUS Political Science) who co-founded Cityscape Farms with NUS alumni Davian Chan Ze Peng and Manel Joseph Seet (School of Computing) and Ho Hol Yin (Faculty of Science) to in their words “bring sustainable farming to Singaporeans by integrating nature into homes, schools and offices.” https://tinyurl.com/mur6xeth

4. LECTURE | Border Wars and the Making of Religious Difference
Associate Professor Angie Heo (University of Chicago) recently delivered the inaugural Distinguished Lecture presented by the GL Louis Religious Pluralism Research Cluster. Her talk and subsequent Q&A hosted by Associate Professor Jack Chia (NUS History) delved into the role of religious practices and discourses in shaping and moving the politics of invasion, asylum and security in the world. https://tinyurl.com/3ck8bmty

5. CNA938 Rewind - Vietnam did it. Could Singapore one day ban Telegram?
Vietnam has just ordered the banning of messaging app Telegram for its lack of cooperation in the combat of alleged crimes committed by its users. NUS Communications and New Media Head Associate Professor Natalie Pang, who specialises in socio-technical studies of technology, describes the conditions that would have to be met before a platform is blocked in Singapore. https://tinyurl.com/5232zrcw

3. First volume of the series focuses on the history of TCM development in Singapore
NUS Chinese Studies has collaborated with the National Taiwan University Press to launch the "Overseas Chinese Academic Series" to jointly promote the diversified development of Chinese language and Sinology studies. The NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health is looking for interested participants to take part in a fully remote research study (no study visits required) to understand your digital behaviour patterns over a 14-day period. You will be asked to download a study app called Avicenna on your smartphone, which triggers mini surveys and games over a 10-day period. The app also passively collects data on your screen usage patterns, physical activity and other health outcomes.

For your participation, you will be reimbursed up to $25 for your participation if you complete at least 80% of mini surveys and games for each round.

2. Professor Dariusz Wójcik (NUS Geography) clinches prestigious Royal Geographical Society Murchison Award
The Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers (RGS-IBG) noted that the award is in recognition of Prof Wójcik’s body of publications, which has “forged a whole new branch of geographical science” and has established geography “as a key discipline for the study of money and finance.” https://tinyurl.com/nusgeog-rgsibgaward

3. Give more thought to lowering Singapore’s voting age to 18
