1. Leveraging Technology to Address Needs of Ageing Population
At a recent NUS Centre for Family and Population Research and Population Association of Singapore conference, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Ms Indranee Rajah pointed out that Singapore can tap technological developments to meet the needs of its rapidly ageing population and that its residents – who now live longer and healthier lives – can remain in the workforce longer. https://tinyurl.com/43u7brab

2. “Ways of Being and Belonging: Integration, Identity, and Social Resilience of Cross-National Families in Singapore”
A new research project by Raffles Professor of Social Sciences Brenda S.A. 4. LECTURE | Living in the Society of the Gods: A Critical Comparative Approach to Gods as seen from the Chinese Case (13 June 2024)
Hosted by NUS Chinese Studies, the Wan Boo Sow Research Centre for Chinese Culture and the Asia Research Institute, Professor of Daoism and Chinese religions at École Pratique des Hautes Études – PSL, Vincent Goossaert will be presenting key findings from his ongoing work on Chinese gods and processes of subjectification where such gods affirm unique personas and engage humans in person-to-person interactions. https://tinyurl.com/pjz99fhk

5. CONFERENCE | “Indian Diaspora in Asia” (18-19 July 2024)

1. NUS Linguists Make Breakthrough Discovery toward Detection of Early Linguistic Signs of Dementia
A study led by linguists from NUS English, Linguistics and Theatre Studies, in collaboration with researchers from NUS Medicine, has found that early linguistic signs of dementia can be detected through the study of the natural speech of senior Singaporeans. https://tinyurl.com/38a9smc9

2. Giving in Singapore Remains Resilient

3. On CNA’s ‘On the Red Dot: Family Mysteries’
Multi-disciplinary artist Inch Chua searches for the reason her great grandmother sold off her grandmother (at age three), soon after arriving in Singapore by boat from China, and uncovers the stories of challenges and hardships faced by the masses of immigrant labourers – coolies and samsui women – in Singapore from the late 19th century into the 20th century, with the guidance of historians and sociologists such as Dr Donna Brunero (NUS History) and Associate Professor Kelvin Low (NUS Sociology and Anthropology).⁠ https://miniurl.pro/cna20240710

1. Piloting Inter-Generational Socialisation and Relationships
Inspired by the insights she gained from research she conducted years ago on Kotoen – an age-integrated facility that provides childcare centre, elderly home and nursing home services in Japan – Assoc Prof Thang Leng Leng (NUS Japanese Studies) recently worked with Dr Wu Xi Vivien (Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine) and Cara Lee (Director of Academic Services, Early Childhood Development Centres, Anglican Preschool Services) to plan and run a ten-week inter-generational trial at St John’s-St Margaret’s. They paired preschoolers with senior nursing home residents aged 70 to 94, and witnessed how their relationships developed as well as the benefits they each drew from the experience. 2. Making a Sea Change
NUS alumna Kathy Xu (NUS History ’04 and MSc in Science Communications ’21) believes that people should be more responsible for this planet and established The Dorsal Effect, a social enterprise that provides an alternative livelihood for shark fishermen in Lombok, Indonesia, through ecotourism. https://tinyurl.com/yeynsmp7

1. The Inaugural CHS Career & Internship Fair 2024: Matching Students with their Ideal Employers and Opportunities
The recently held event saw the participation of more than 250 executives representing 64 potential employer companies, who engaged the 2,272 NUS College of Humanities and Sciences students – from the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences – as well as other colleges and faculties across NUS, the vast majority of whom said unequivocally that the event presented them the employer mix and opportunities that matched their career aspirations and preferences well. 2. NUS Researchers Develop Innovative Approaches to Tackle False Information on Multiple Fronts

3. Fostering Inclusive Communities for Sustainable Social Development

5. RESEARCH | Family Environment, Loneliness, Hope, and Subjective Well-Being of Asian Older Adults
Associate Professor Srinivasan Chokkanathan (NUS Social Work) looked into the challenges faced by older adults, considering the various factors that influenced their subjective well-being (SWB), and found an association between positive family environments, lower loneliness levels and higher levels of SWB. https://tinyurl.com/bde4bnyt

On World Mental Health Day 2024 (10 October), FASS opened the doors to the latest PitStop on campus – a space devoted to providing students needing a break from the hustle and bustle of student life with the space and resources to help them decompress and achieve wellness. 2. NUS soars to 17th in the world in Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025
NUS has come in at 17th place in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025 after holding at 19 for two consecutive years. It maintains its 3rd position in Asia and is currently the top university in ASEAN.

3. Inaugural NUS CHS Career & Internship Fair 2024 draws over 60 leading employers offering jobs and internship opportunities
The fair saw participation from 64 companies, representing a wide spectrum of industries, from technology and finance to education, healthcare, and government agencies. 4. LECTURE | Lost in the Cold War: The Story of Jack Downey, America’s Longest Held POW (14 October 2024)
In this talk hosted by NUS Chinese Studies and the Wan Boo Sow Research Centre, Professor Thomas Christensen (Columbia University) will be presenting on the book he co-wrote with John T. Downey, who was captured by Chinese soldiers in 1952 after his plane was shot down over Manchuria during the Korean War, and was only released in 1973. https://tinyurl.com/bdewm4sz

5. FASS BROWN BAG SEMINAR | Chemical labor: the gendered political ecologies of herbicide adoption in the rainfed rice belt of India (17 October 2024)
NUS Geography’s Dr Carly Nichols will be referencing ethnographic data on weedicide adoption in subsistence areas of eastern Madhya Pradesh as she posits that weedicide adoption is both the cause and symptom of a broader reshuffling of socio-ecological relations, and particularly on gendered relations. https://tinyurl.com/224hk9wz

6. LECTURE | Cross Connections: Telephones to Other Worlds by Dr Sharvari Sastry (18 October 2024)

7. FASS DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES IN BUDDHIST STUDIES | The Buddhist Cosmopolis: Connectivity, Diversity, and Materiality in the Buddhist World(s) (18 October 2024)
In his lecture, Professor Tansen Sen (New York University) will explain the notion of a Buddhist cosmopolis and delve into the ways in which the circulations of Buddhist ideas, literature, art and people, and the diversity of Buddhist practices and ideas could be studied and conceptualised. 2. FASS & Club Rainbow @ The Jewel Canopy Park
It was a wonderful day of smiles and laughter as 35 staff, students and alumni from FASS recently treated 22 children from Club Rainbow (Singapore) and their families to a day out at Jewel Changi Airport’s Canopy Park. The children had a blast exploring the verdant garden, playing on the slides and bouncing on giant nets! 3. RESEARCH | Singaporean Women Living in China: The Uneven Burdens of Middle-class Transnational Caregiving
Professor Elaine Ho (NUS Geography) and Associate Professor Leng Leng Thang (NUS Japanese Studies) study the caregiving experiences of single female migrants from Singapore and reveal valuable insights on how migrants grapple with gender and heteronormative biases within both migration and caregiving systems. https://tinyurl.com/bdcswm2j
