Late last month, NUS Computing Assoc Prof Martin Henz launched a book called the Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs Java Script (SICP JS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology!
Prof Henz's book is an adaptation of the computer science textbook Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (SICP), which represented a landmark in computer science education & was written by Hal Abelson & Gerald Jay Sussman.
Here’s a fun fact: Prof Henz & his NUS colleagues, Dr Low Kok Lim & Dr Boyd Anderson, also used various drafts and revisions of SICP JS in the NUS Computing module, CS1101S Programming Methodology!
➡️ Learn more about the textbook here: https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/structure-and-interpretation-computer-programs-1
📸 Check out prof Henz (in dark blue, nearest to the screen), at his book launch at MIT! 🎉 Seated with him are co-authors (from left to right) Harold Abelson, Julie Sussman, & Gerald Jay Sussman (standing).

Last weekend, students from Developer Student Clubs @ NUS Computing (DSC) received an appreciation plaque from Education Minister Chan Chun Sing for helping Diabetes Singapore improve their diabetes screening workflow, data management, and stakeholder engagement, with a new and improved database management system.
They were led by project team leaders Olivia Johansen (Computer Science, Year 3) and Wong Zhou Wai (Business Analytics, Year 3) (extreme right, holding plaque together).
The club took the chance to show the new and improved features of the database management system to Minister Chan at Diabetes Singapore’s cycling charity ride in Sentosa last Saturday. 💪 This was followed by a cycling trip around Sentosa with the club’s adviser, senior lecturer Dr Sharon Tan (first row, fourth from left, in blue & orange).
Well done, to the Project Siew Dai team! 😊✨

Do you unlock your smartphone with your face or fingerprint? 📲 Biometrics promise enhanced security because they can't be lost or forgotten, and aren't easily forged or duplicated. But that's not to say it is foolproof.
What can be done to minimise any potential abuse of biometrics data? NUS Computing Associate Professor Terence Sim weighs in on the ways to prevent such abuse.

On Tuesday, the NUS Centre for Research in Privacy Technologies (N-CRiPT) under NUS Computing signed a research collaboration agreement with Singapore-based cyber intelligence firm Cyber Intelligence House (CIH) to develop a cyber risk index to show how exposed different industries around the world are to cyber threats.
By using up to 200 variables and mapping threats collected from the dark web and deep web, N-CRiPT and CIH will utilise the most pertinent variables to create powerful and detailed risk indexes.
