Assoc Prof Martin Henz is bringing NUS Computing to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology! A/P Henz recently started his sabbatical as a Visiting Scholar at MIT, where he’s just finished teaching a small course called "A Taste of Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs, Java Script Edition (SICP JS)", in late January. The course was offered as part of MIT’s Independent Activities Period, and was open to all MIT students, staff, and alumni. ⚙️ 💻

As a special perk, legendary computer science educator Gerald Jay Sussman — the original co-author of Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs — also participated in the course as a ‘student’ along with his wife, computer programmer Julie Sussman.

For four second-year Computer Science students who volunteered to help A/P Henz facilitate a segment of his online classes (dubbed studio sessions), this means they’ve earned eternal bragging rights! 🤩

Research and collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI) has been given a shot in the arm with the official launch of the NUS Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (NUSAIL) on Mon, 21 Feb.

Hosted at NUS Computing, NUSAIL’s mission is to be a centre of excellence in AI research, education, and practice. It started as a self-initiated effort among faculty members who taught AI at NUS Computing.

The event also saw the introduction of Rosetta, an initiative started by faculty members at NUS Computing. The special interest group brings together faculty members in NUS who teach AI courses in a spirit of dialogue and collaboration so as to leverage each other’s strengths and support each other in the field of AI education.

The flexibility to explore both the hardware and software aspects of computing — that's what made Rishab decide to study Computer Engineering at NUS. Then a freshman who hadn’t yet decided on which area to specialise in, he realised it was the perfect fit for someone who loved figuring out how things work, and how to put them together.

Congrats to NUS Computing Professor Ooi Beng Chin for winning the University Research Recognition Award! The award recognises researchers whose works have impacted & advanced the frontiers of knowledge, & positioned NUS at the forefront of their areas of expertise.

Prof Ooi's research on the fundamental data and systems abstractions of modern data-driven applications laid the foundation for the design & implementation of systems that are not only efficient and robust, but also scalable and secure.

His other extensive research, which ranges from end-to-end pipeline supporting all data processing steps to complex data analytics, yielded a large-scale software system that significantly improves on prior research-focused systems. The rigorous algorithmic and theoretical results were published in top journals & international conferences.

Congrats, prof Ooi!

Check out this cool art installation by NUS Computing students Hardy Shein Nyien Chan and Vineeth Buddha at UCC Foyer if you haven't! The installation is Hardy and Vineeth's response to the main theme of NUS Arts Festival 2022: Shades of Light(ness), NUS’ flagship arts event.

For this project, Hardy & Vineeth were mentored by senior lecturer Dr Anand Bhojan, & they developed the interactive installation in collaboration with Singaporean artist A'shua Imran. Using computer vision & Augmented Reality (AR), they set up an interactive art installation that allows users to participate in an eclipse as moths.

Catch An Eclipse of Moths this weekend:
🗓 Sat 26 Mar to Sun 27 March
7:00 pm - 9.30 pm on both days
📍 University Cultural Centre Foyer, NUS
Admission is free
